Carla's Story
Life:
I found fulfillment in being a Christian homeschooling mom with 3 sons, ages 33, 32, and 20. My youngest son has earned his GED and has attended one year at Pellisippi State College and is now working at Kroger's and Applebee's; his father and I were divorced in 2012 after 34 yrs. of marriage. I enjoy contra dancing; playing flute, piccolo, Native American drum, and alto and bass flutes in the the Silver Winds Flute choir in Knoxville. Our oldest son, Brian, graduated with highest honors from Tennessee Wesleyan College, played keyboard in a Christian rock band and is married to a UT-Austin grad. He is a computer programmer with his own business in Nashville, TN and now has a 3 daughters. My middle son, Tod, is a computer software engineer, living in GA with his long time Chinese sweetheart. My bliss these days is contra dancing every opportunity I can, wherever I can, while serving as the Facebook page administrator and board member/secretary for the Knoxville contra dance group and belonging to the Jonesborough, TN dance group as well. I have sung 1st soprano in the Chattanooga City Chorale, Athens Area Community Choir and the Tennessee Valley Opera Chorus and have sung as a guest singer with the Brainerd Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga under the direction of my friend, Dr. Tom Hammett and under the baton of Dr. Johnny Mann; performed on flute and piccolo with the Athens and Etowah, TN Town Bands and the Athens First Baptist Church orchestra and have been a member of Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble for over 3 yrs. and now serve as vice-president; and I have performed special music for many churches and weddings, mostly in the southeast U.S. One of the highlights in my flute playing career was performing with my musical ministry in Davao City in the Philippines in 2008; I hope to go there again soon.
P.S. - I made it back to the Philippines in May - June of 2015, performing for a crusade, with almost 400 baptisms! This year has been an incredible roller coaster ride with several deaths that touched me personally, including the death of my father, and on the up-swing, the birth of a third granddaughter and my engagement to the man of my dreams. ...Married Lanny Huddleston, a retired band director/teacher, on Dec. 27, 2015. serves as president of the board of directors while I have been re-elected into my 3rd yr. as vice-president), the Central Baptist Church Orchestra in Oak Ridge and are on rotation for them performing at an assisted living facility (where my late father used to live when he was here in Oak Ridge); we sit in with various other high school and community bands when requested, and we enjoy going to contra dances together where I'm now practicing to be a caller, plus Lanny and I have formed a contra dance band which debuts at an Oak Ridge contra dance in May. Jan., 2020 update: Did I mention the Knoxville flute choir I’ve been performing in for the last 7-8 years? I’ve had the opportunities to play the bass and alto flutes in addition to my C flute and piccolo. The bass flute is a particular challenge for me because it’s so long and heavy for my short little arms and fingers, but I managed to fall so in love with the alto flute (with the curved head) that I bought one early last year and shortly after attended a low flute retreat in Chattanooga under the direction of world-renowned Chris Potter from Colorado. Lanny has written several arrangements for us for alto flute, guitar, and one including a viola part that we have performed for several local and out-of-town occasions. I particularly enjoyed the piece we did with viola; it sure sounds good harmonizing with the alto flute! Although Lanny and I decided to relinquish our memberships and offices in all the community bands we were in (so we could free ourselves up some); we still have many opportunities to perform together; and Lanny helps out with directing local rehearsals when needed and has done guest conducting and judging band contests. Our contra dance band performs regularly in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Indiana. I returned to my position as Secretary of the Knoxville contra dance board of directors after we left the TN Wind Symphony...just 2 more years of that left! Oh, and we bought a 27’ camper trailer last summer and have enjoyed 3 trips in so far and are looking forward to many more camping adventures! My youngest son is a lance corporal in the Marines and just got married earlier this year. My most recent endeavor is studying metaphysics and quantum physics as I grow into my spiritual awakening.
