Carlan's Story
Life
After graduation from Page, I attended UNC-G where I graduated in 1981 with a double major in English and history and a minor in secondary education with honors (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa). I did my student teaching at Northeast Guilford Senior High School during the 80-81 school year with social studies teacher Sue Yoder. I was hired by the Duval County Public Schools (Jacksonville, Florida) to teach at Stanton College Preparatory School, an academic magnet school (ranked #1 in the nation by Newsweek magazine in 2000). After 21 years (half my life) at Stanton, I started at Stanton's sister school, the PAXON School for Advanced Studies, in August, 2002, where I teach social studies and am, in essence, administrative assistant extraordinare.
School
I attended General Greene Elementary School (1965-1971), Mendenhall Junior High School (1971-1974), Walter Hines Page Senior High School (1974-1977), and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1977-1981). In high school, I worked on the staff...Expand for more
of the school newspaper "Pages by Page" and was features editor my senior year. I also served as an assistant to Jane Higgins in the science department.
College
I attended The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, graduating in May, 1981. At UNC-G, I double majored in English and History and minored in secondary education. I graduated with honors, Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
Workplace
In July, 1981, I was hired to teach in a new program in education in Jacksonville, Florida, specifically Stanton College Preparatory School. Stanton is an academic magnet school offering only honors, AP, and IB classes. I am proud to have been a member of the charter faculty and remained at Stanton for 21 years. During my tenure Stanton was recognized as a National Model School by the US Department of Education (1987) and as the Number One school in the nation by Newsweek in 2000. In August, 2002, I transferred to Stanton's "sister school" PAXON School for Advanced Studies where I teach social studies/history.
