Carlton's Story

After graduation, I went to college and worked full-time. I received an A.S. degree in Transportation/Warehousing at Chaffey College and then pursued and eventually received a B.A. (or is that B.S.?) degree in History. While in college, I worked in a Hardware store and as a signmaker in a sign shop. On the weekends, I volunteered my time at the Orange Empire Railway Museum and became a "Motorman". A "Motorman" is to an electric railway what an "Engineer" is to a regular (steam/diesel) railroad. I operated various types of historical streetcars, interurbans, electric locomotives and the occasional diesel. Most of the rolling stock that I got to "play" with were of Pacific Electric (these were the famed "Red Cars") or Los Angeles Railway (lessor known than the Red Cars and known as the "Yellow Cars) stock. In 1990, I wanted some steam experience and hired out at Knott's Berry Farm as an Engineer/Fireman and ran that train for about 3 years. The two locomotives over there are 1881 vintage Baldwin locomotives. They also have a "Galloping Goose" railbus (Rio Grande Southern #3) which I ran during the off-season. It was at Knott's that I met my wife, Margaret, and we were married in 1993. In August 1993, we escaped Southern California when I hired out with the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, AZ. It was over here that I operated and worked on their steam locos as well an an ALCO FPA4 Diesel. Both steam locos over there were ALCO (American Locomotive Co.)products and were built in 1906 and 1910. I thoroughly enjoyed working with steam but the pay wasn't very good and the politics involved were even worse. I ultimately had to find something that paid the bills better. In 1996, I hired on with the Burlington Northern RR in Pasco WA. as a "Conductor" although I worked as a "Switchman" in the Hump yard. A year later, I got my "Engineer" rights and moved to Spokane. Being a high-seniority terminal, I spent a number of years as a Switchman (which I preffered to a conductor's position anyway) and did a number of trips as Brakeman, Conductor, as well as Engineer. I actually enjoyed switching freight cars and soon realized that there is an "art" to it. You've got to know what you're doing when you "kick" a car or you can cause a lot of damage or even kill somebody. So now I have a lot of respect for the lowly switchman! In 2004, my seniority coupled with a boom in traffic put me squarely into an Engineer's position which I held since. Currently, I work the "Pasco Pool" running freight trains between Spokane and Pasco although I have run trains between Spokane-Wenatchee, Spokane-Whitefish (gorgeous run!), Spokane-Kettle Falls. I also did a little time on the Coast running between Interbay (Seattle) to Vancouver WA. That was a nice run but Seattle, like any big city is too much of a Rat-hole to me. Nice place to visit, though. I guess railroading is in my blood as it is something I do well and for the most part, enjoy. It's a good stable business and, if you've got the seniority, it's very secure. I still miss steam engines, though, however a consist of Geeps working hard on the Kettle Turn is pretty cool! The scenery up here is great although the run to Pasco is mostly sage brush and farmland. None-the-less, I still get to see (and run over) lots of wildlife. Deer (both whitetail and mule) are as common as rats and the occasional Elk are often seen. Once in a blue moon, I'll spot a moose. as for birds, there are ...Expand for more
wild turkeys, hawks, Bald Eagles, owls, ducks, Canada Geese and even pelicans! All this on the bleakest of runs out of Spokane. Eventually, when I get enough seniority to hold the Whitefish Pool, I'll mark up there. I did that run every now and then when I was on the "Extra Board". This run goes east from Spokane, thru the Idaho Panhandle and into Montana to Whitefish, mostly on former Great Northern trackage. It follows the Kootenei River thru Troy and Libby and then climbs up Flathead Mountain and then at the crest goes thru the 7 1/2 mile long Flathead tunnel. The wildlife includes whitetail deer, Elk, moose, bears(I've seen both Black, brown and grizzly), cougars and bobcats. Birds include a mess of Osprey and Bald Eagles as well as Wild turkey and Canada Geese. The Kootenei river is beautiful and, to my understanding, has great fishing. The railroad can be a bit rough, with odd hours and being on call all the time and being an "engineer" may not have the prestige that it once had but the view out of my "office" window is the best of the best! My wife and I have 3 girls, Rosemary (15), Chloe (13), and Maggie (11). My wife and the girls are into Irish Dance and we own an Irish Dance Studio called the "Kelly Irish Dancers". So far, we have over 100 students and are now one of the biggest of Irish dance schools in the Spokane area. We also own a former Grange Hall which itself was up until 1943 a two-room schoolhouse. Known as the "Valley Prairie" Grange, it closed in 2000 and we bought it. It sits on four acres 20 miles north of Spokane in a place called "Chattaroy" and we moved our Double-wide onto the property. Yeah, I guess you can call me "Trailer Trash"! I spend most of my free time milling about the property, doing restoration and maintainence chores. It is here where we run our dance studio. Summer activities up here include cutting firewood and Winter activities include plowing snow! (If you buy into the "Global Warming" thing, think again! Al Gore doesn't have a clue!) Last Winter, I spent a lot of time on my tractor dealing with "Global Warming". We also rent the Hall for parties, ho-downs, camp-outs and the occaisional wedding reception. One of these was pretty much a "Shot-gun" wedding which had to be planned and carried out within a week. AH! the joys of country livin'!!! Well, I'm pretty much doing what I wanted in life. Some of my other hobbies include the restoration of a couple of old trucks which includes my daily driver, a 1951 GMC 3/4 ton flatbed and a 2 ton 1941 Chevy tanker truck. The tanker truck runs great but it doesn't stop so well! Gotta do some work on the brakes. I also am building a miniature railway on the property which is big enough to carry people. I have one gas loco that I built as well as a steam loco that is near completion on an overhaul. The train is a big hit at the various functions and parties we throw. I also like to collect neat old "junk". Got a pile of mine rail and ore car parts and I just picked-up an old John Deere 5-bottom plow and a neat old feed grinder in exchange for a few cases of beer! The wife thinks I'm a little crazy for collecting old junk but I guess it's a "guy thing". I thank God for the Blessings He bestowed upon me! Well, gotta go! I got stuff to do. Feel free to say Hi or even visit. It doesn't matter if you were one of my friends at Amat or just simply a fellow classmate, your still welcome. Got lots of room up here! CARL
