Carmen's Story
Life
Born in Cottonwood County , Mountain Lake MN; Grew up on a farm close to Windom, and Jeffers. Graduated from Windom HS June 1965. Went to Worthington Junior College.
Currently living in Albuquerque New Mexico.....High Desert. We are living in the SW corner of ABQ. We are only 20 miles West of the Sandia Mountains. We moved here in November 2004 from Apple Valley MN. Larry, my other half, is retired, and after doing a thorough nation wide climate research, decided that Albuquerque has some of the best weather in the US. It is a very mild climate year round, low humidity, no mosquitoes, (unless you live near water, and not much water around here except the Rio Grande River.)
2005 was an interesting year for us weather wise, and still is. We love it here! And it doesn't get as hot as Phoenix or Southern AZ or Southern NM or Texas. People actually come here to cool off! LOL!
The Albuquerque City Lights at night time are the most breath taking view you will find anywhere ! Acres and acres of golden lights for miles.....with unobstructed views. Like Golden shimmering diamonds in the night sky ! It is something you have to see and experience for yourself!
I am divorced from a 22 year marriage, and now a widow after my ex-husband passed away in April 2008. My 2 children are grown, and my daughter Kerry, age 36, is married, and has given me two Grandsons; and a granddaughter. One was born March 16th, 2005; the 2nd one, January 1st, 2007; and a daughter March 09, 2011. She moved from MN, to Colorado in Sept. 2007 because of her husbands job promotion.
My son, Robert, is almost 43, and is a professional truck driver. I have 2 biological children; 6 step; one foster son; and several extended family members. At the age of 28, I had 9 kids under one roof. That was a challenge!
In January 1970 I became the ORIGINAL AND SOLE Founder of a Single Parents Group called: SINGLE PARENTS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP. It was originally my brainchild, and was in my possession until April 1970 when GMAE (Greater MN Assoc. of Evangelicals ) took it over after asking my permission. The First 3 months was a bit tough getting it off the ground, and it was just me promoting it for quite awhile. Than it caught on, and began snowballing. It has become a huge success, and has branched out to other cities and states, so I have been told. My own cousin who was widowed young, met her current husband through the group I started. They have always been forever grateful to me. At the First Anniversary, and their 25th Anniversaries I was honored and recognized a...Expand for more
s being the Original Founder, and given standing ovations both times. I am very proud of that group, and all it has accomplished over the years.

Military
WAC Veteran Vietnam-Era
Enlisted in the Women's Army Corps 4 April 1967 from Minneapolis MN
Fort Mc Clellan Alabama was my WAC Boot camp and also Clerical AIT.
After AIT Graduation, I was sent to Fort Myer Virgiania near Washington D.C. My duty station was in the Pentagon working for the Army's DCSPER: Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. Very interesting duty assignments. One of my military bosses from Pentagon duty became very famous, COL David Hackworth. He was a FOX news military analyst; a famous author; and the nations highest decorated living soldier until his death in May 2005. I wrote him an email once asking if he remembered me, and he wrote back saying yes he did.
In September and October 1968 I was transferred to Fort Leavenworth Kansas and worked in the Base Housing office. I was discharged 22 October 1968 because of pregnancy with an Honorable discharge. I enlisted in the Army Reserves twice....... from 1972 - 1974 ; and again from 1979 - 1981. Both times I was stationed at 5501st US Army Hospital at Fort Snelling MN. I worked as an Army Reserve WAC Recruiter 72 - 74. Later I also worked in Public Affairs.
I enjoyed my time in the military and met many wonderful people because of those experiences.
I met my dearest and closest friend while in WAC processing, before Basic started, and we have been friends since 8 April 1967! We have become "sisters".
I am very involved in Women Veterans affairs and organizations. I was the MN State President for about 4 years for a group called: WOMEN VETERANS OF MINNESOTA, which was open to all branches of service.... to Women Veterans State wide in Minnesota. I also wrote the First ever Membership directory for Women Vets of MN, that is still in use in MN Government offices even today. I was also active in the Twin Cities Chapter of WAC Veterans while I lived in MN.
Now that I am in Albuquerque NM I am active in Veterans affairs here too; and in the process of creating a group here that will be called WOMEN VETERANS OF NEW MEXICO. It just got off the ground. I am patterning it after my MN group.
I also served on the Albuquerque United Veterans Council as a back up delegate from our WAC Vets here. And I enjoy helping advocate for other Vets when needed.
