Carol's Story

Heavens, I keep getting e.mail reminders to sign up on this site, so why not? I wasn't especially wild in high school...Jane Graham and I occasionally ditched class and my dad once caught me just after I had smoked a wicked cigarette (when I was 13). I wasn't very smart; I had smoked it in an upstairs bedroom and opened the window, thinking nobody would be able to smell it. Wrong! I left North Carolina for Colorado, worked for a few years as a model (imagine!) and a secretary while attending Denver University part-time, then I went to Santa Cruz, California, and finished up my degree. David and I met in college and got married in 1965 (at the "old age" of 28) and had two daughters, now 36 and 38. We settled in the Los Angeles area and brought the girls up in the surfing-Hollywood-glitzy environment of LaLaLand. They both emerged pretty stable and unscathed by the phoniness around them (although, lest I sound harsh, I assure you that there are millions of wonderful, down-to-earth people in L.A.). One daughter is a financial analyst for a national mortage company and the other is an attorney. We have two small grandchildren (5 and 2)...and all you grandparents know how much fun that is. I have kept in touch with Jane Graham Wheeler (sorta), and Barbara Bivens Cartright diligently kept me apprised of plans for the last class reunion. Regrettably, I was not able to attend but several of you sent me pictures, etc. Thank you! I doubt that any of us would recognize the other on the street after over 50 years, but I did see some traces of familiarity in Harold Mabe, Jack Gibbs, Bob Puett. Harold still has that calm, sweet look about him that I remember...Jack is still handsome and stylish, as I remember him. My favorite teacher of all time was Mr. Huss. He had a kindness about him that impressed me. He also taught me typing, which I use in my profession. David, a Canadian, and I have lived in New York (our older daughte...Expand for more
r was born there), then in California and a few years ago settled in Plano, Texas (Dallas suburb). We moved here to be in the center of the nation because David travels so extensively. He has worked in missions organizations for decades. During the over-forty years of our marriage I have been able to travel to many countries along with him. I am truly happy in my life choices. I was engaged twice before I married "the right one" and my life has been (and is) good. I love my work as a free-lance writer and editor and am able to work from home. I must say that I committed my life to the Lord soon after I left home and have sought His counsel in my choices and the way I live. He has given me many blessings! I didn't have a crush on any guy in my class (that I can remember). I was always looking at the good-looking athletes from the School for the Deaf. In fact, I was pretty obsessed with those guys and had friendships with some of the girls, as well. My first job was at Rose's Dime Store and heavens, I don't remember how much they paid. Not much, I'm sure. But at 14, making my own money was fabulous. I remember working behind the candy/peanut counter and roasting fresh cashews and other peanuts. I would dip into those delicious hot cashews and eat as many as I wanted. I was so skinny that calories never entered my mind. I think my major goal at that time was to get out of Morganton/Glen Alpine and see the world. And I was able to fulfill that goal. We still travel quite a bit. Our last trip was to Belgium a year ago; did some day trips to Brugge and Ghent (outside Brussels). We had been to many European countries but somehow missed Belgium. Fabulous... I don't have a clue how any of my classmates remember me (if they do). But I remember high school days as pretty happy...nothing traumatic. I wasn't especially confident but still got along pretty well. I would be happy to communicate with any of my former classmates.
