Carol's Story

Wow, thinking back to days at Alhambra High - one day REALLY stands out. November 22, 1963. Radios weren't allowed on campus, but that day, they were playing the news reports all over campus as we all walked around stunned. How could that happen? Why? Who? Now, what would our world be like without our president? We saw Jacqueline with that pink suit & blood on it. Later came the funeral & the small son making a salute. Now, John-John is gone, as well as Jackie. Camelot, it was called. That seemed to be the end of our years of innocence. OK, about me.....I graduated from Alhambra with some of the same "kids" I'd gone to Granada Elementary School. They built a school to the west, across the street from Granada & it wasn't until after I graduated they changed that school's name from Valencia to Granada Elementary East (my granddaughter attended there). My old school was changed to Granada West Middle School. When I went there, we had first through eighth grades. After I graduated (I walked beside Lee Haws because of my height) from Granada in 1960, my family moved to Glendale to a larger house to accommodate two girls & one boy, which didn't work well in a two bedroom house. I attended Glendale High for three years, then talked my parents into having my father drop me on his way to work & pick me up, so I could be with some old friends. I had been a shy one & my younger sister had all the friends, which made me "Sharon's sister" instead of her being known as MY younger sister. I attended Grand Canyon College for summer & fall. Then, married someone I met at GCC that spring. It didn't last & by the time our son was 2, we were divorced. My second marriage lasted a year. My third marriage lasted a little longer, but that, too, ended in divorce. I've remained friends with all ex-husbands. Then, I took account of myself & what I had, what I could offer, what I wanted out of life & this time, my marriage has been good & strong since 1978. Dan & I met at a singles square dance class when I stood by his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. Until knees & hips had to be replaced, we continued dancing. But, we still ride our Gold Wings. Mine is a trike conversion. Dan retired from Scottsdale Police Department & has driven school bus since he retired in 1989. We moved to Cottonwood from Scottsdale over the 1996-97 school year & he drove bus for the high school in Cottonwood un...Expand for more
til February 2013. When we married, I got two daughters by love & one of them has given me two granddaughters by love. One of them gave me a great-granddaughter & great-grandson by blood (who live in Clovis, NM). My son Tim (44) married the other daughter, so I ended up with a granddaughter by love & blood who live in Oklahoma. Since 1988 we have been traveling every summer over the US & Canada. We've been in all the lower 48 & the Canadian Provences except the maritimes. We like to spend a whole summer in one state & get to know it better. We've contacted hundreds of family in Canada because Dan's family emmigrated there. We now have a motorhome & can tow a trailer with my trike inside or our car. Thinking that long motorcycle trips are a thing of the past, but we did have fun going to rallies & riding thousands of miles in a summer. How do I think people will remember me? Tall, gangly, dark hair, uncoordinated in sports, had a hard time making friends, I was good in English & Penmanship but lousy in Math. I love to sing & was in choir/chorus & girls double octette. I wasn't one of those cute, petite girls who all the guys made a fuss over. I had a horse in grade school & could handle him better than my father ever could. Over the years, I lost track of all my friends. Part of that was my first husband who was an abusive control freak. He didn't even want me to write letters to a girl I'd known and written to since we were 10. She lived in Detroit & our families had identical 1956 Packard Clipper cars. Haven't been able to track her on internet. I'd like to find some people I went to Granada Elementary with. I lost the phone number of someone who said he was in contact with several graduates. I've wondered where some "kids" are I used to know waaaay back when I was a kid. If I think of more to add, I'll be back....;. In March 2013 we closed on a home in Prescott Country Club which is in Dewey. We love it & being in a cooler city. I have found 10 other Lions who live from Kirkland, Prescott, Prescott & Chino Valleys as well as two others in Dewey. I've contacted them through classmates & hope to hear from them all soon. It would be great to get together. I gave them all my phone number but email is blocked by classmates, so contact me through classmates. I only found those people but there may be others who hadn't changed their info, so let me know.
