Carol's Story

This is a copy of the biography I just wrote for our church. Carol Paul and Carol Harrington Paul was born in Flint Michigan of German / Irish descent. He was the son of James and Elinor (Schlaack) Harrington. His father worked for General Motors and his mother was a housewife. Paul was the third of four children, having one older sister and brother and one younger sister. He attended Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Flint, Michigan where he also had his elementary education, through 8th grade. He went to Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw for his high school education and graduated in 1964; from there he went on to Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin, graduating with a BA in 1968. While working full time for General Motors, he returned to college in 1995 at the University of Michigan where he obtained his teaching certificate. Carol Hayes was born in Flint, Michigan, to Irish/English parents. She was the daughter of Russell and Leona (Spencer) Hayes. Her father owned his own business, Hayes and Son heating and air conditioning of Flint, Michigan, and her mother was the bookkeeper. Carol was the baby of seven children, with four older brothers and two older sisters. She graduated from Beecher High School in 1967, and after graduation served one year in the United States Marine Corp. During Paul and Carol's high school years, they lived in the same neighborhood and had many of the same friends but never met because Carol attended the public high school and Paul attended Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw, Michigan. They later learned while attending one of Carol's class reunions that Paul knew most of the same kids that Carol had gone to school with. What a small world. In 1972, Paul and Carol were encouraged to go on a blind date by a couple who knew both of them. They really hit it off and started dating on a regular basis. After each date they would go over to Paul's apartment. Paul would sit on the sofa and Carol would sit in the chair. After their third date, Paul placed their coats in the chair so Carol would have to sit next to him on the sofa. What a sneaky guy he was! On March 24, 1973, they were married. The wedding was small and took place at Grace Lutheran Church in Durand, Michigan. They honeymooned on Mackinac Island in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. One year later they bought a home in Durand where they lived for the following 23 years. They were very active members of Grace and served in many different capacities. Paul worked for General Motors in Flint, Michigan from 1968 to 1998, retiring after 30 years. After retirement he and Carol moved to Greer's Ferry Lake, Arkansas where they bought a beautiful cabin on two acres in the mountains on Greer's Ferry Lake. Paul taught at three different high schools. For one year he taught Civics and was Assistant Varsity Football Coach and Assistant Varsity Track Coach at Central High School in West Helena in the Mississippi Delta. He spent a year in Pine Bluff, Arkansas at St. Joseph Catholic High School, teaching American History, Civics, Sociology, Speech and Health both at the junior and senior levels while also serving as head coach of the girls¿ high school in volleyball, basketball and fast pitch soft ball. While teaching in Pine Bluff and in West Helena, Paul and Carol rented an apartment during the school year all the while still maintaining their cabin home in Greer's Ferry. For his third teaching position, Paul was fortunate when hired at Concord High School in Concord, Arkansas just 20 miles from their cabin. He continued to work at Concord H.S for the next 5 years where he taught, U.S History, World History and Global studies. Paul also volunteered his time as assistant fast pitch softball coach at Girls¿ Senior High School level. Paul and Carol are blessed to have three daughters: Sarah Melissa, Keely Ruth and Brandi Nicole. Sarah is Carol's daughter from a previous marriage, and shortly after Paul and Carol were married, Paul adopted her. She considers him her only daddy. Sarah Melissa was born on May 9, 1971. Sarah graduated from Durand High School in 1989 and went on to attend Michigan State University where she was chosen to enter a program that enabled her and 17 other Michigan State students to attend a university in Japan for one year. While there she was only to speak, read and write in Japanese. At the end of the year, these 18 students spent two weeks in Hawaii where they were to slowly be reintroduced into their native language. While there, Sarah was hired by the Atlantis Submarine corp. to serve as a Japanese interpreter where she remained for the following five years. She also enjoyed sc...Expand for more
uba diving and eventually obtained her pilot¿s license and co piloted the submarine as part of her duties. She is now married and lives in Oceanside, California. Her husband Brian is a deep sea diver and they have two beautiful children: their daughter Jaden was born on Sept. 19, 2005, and their son, Jacob was born on May 5, 2008. Paul and Carol's middle daughter Keely was born on May 13, 1974. She attended Michigan Lutheran Seminary through her sophomore year and then moved back home and graduated from Byron High School in 1992. She attended Lansing Community College for one year and then Central Michigan University. In 1995 she entered the United States Navy and served for 11 years. Her first duty station was in Washington, D.C. working for the Navy Recruiting Headquarters. While there she had the opportunity to work on President Clinton's second Inaugural Committee and attend the Inaugural Ball in D.C. Keely also served in Spain. In 1999 she transferred overseas to Sicily, Italy, where she met her husband, Michael. He is a Seabee, part of the Navy's Construction Force, and a welder, Michael has been in the Navy for almost 10 years, and plans to make a career of it. He has also spent time as a Navy Recruiter in Virginia Beach where he was the top recruiter for 3 years in a row. He has spent time in Cuba, building prison cells for Al Quaeda prisoners, in Spain, Honduras, Kuwait, and most recently 7 months in Iraq. He is scheduled to go to Afghanistan in August 2009. Their first son, Devon, was born in Italy on August 17, 2000, and on Jan. 2, 2003, their second child, Kaleb, was born. After living 2 ½ years in Italy, Keely and her family returned to the U.S and were stationed in Virginia Beach, Va. from 2001 to 2007. Keely was discharged from the Navy in October, 2006 and accepted a civilian job in Los Angeles, CA, working for Northrop Grumman. Her family soon followed. Paul and Carol's youngest daughter Brandi Nicole was born on June 19, 1978. She graduated from Byron High School in Byron, Michigan in 1996. She attended Michigan State University, and after moving to Tennessee in 2006, started attending ETSU. She will graduate in May of 2010 with a BS in History and go on to teach at the high school level. She is married to Nick McCloud and they have twins, Sam and Sydney who were born on July 15, 2002. Nick works as a prison guard at North East Correctional Facility in Mountain City. They are also members here at Living Word. When Paul and Carol moved to Arkansas, where they lived for eight years, they hadn't researched where the nearest WELS church was. They figured they would be everywhere, as in Michigan. Wrong! They joined Faith Lutheran Church in Russellville, a 125-mile drive each way to church every Sunday. They later transferred to Living Water Lutheran Church in Hot Springs and were still about 100 miles one way from their church. They had been talking about selling the cabin and moving closer to a WELS church but wanted to find the RIGHT church. They had been praying about it for a good 6 months when Concord High School cut back their teaching staff and Paul lost his job. The next day they put their cabin on the market and asked God to lead them. One week later the cabin sold. They had made the decision not to move any further north than Tennessee, so they began looking on the WELS website for a church in the Northeast part of Tennessee. They found Living Word and spoke with Pastor Kock on the phone. They were already excited about making this their new church home. Then in May, Paul was offered his job back at Concord and they now had a serious decision to make. Should they stay in Arkansas, rent an apartment, and still have difficulty getting to church each Sunday ¿ or should they completely retire and move to a place they had never been before and have a wonderful new church home. They decided to put God first and let everything else follow. On June 6th, 2006, they left Arkansas and headed to Tennessee with everything they owned in a moving van. They have never regretted their decision as God has done nothing but shower blessings on them in their new home. They dove into The Word and took every class that Pastor offered as they were starved for God's precious Word. May he continue to fill this Christian couple with His saving message as they give thanks to Him for all He has given them. They LOVE their new church family and are so blessed because God did lead them to the RIGHT church. We¿re glad to have Paul and Carol in our congregation and hope they truly feel at home; we wish them and their family an overflow of God¿s blessings.
