Carol's Story
Life
I lived in England for a year when I was 19, and brought back my husband as a souvenir. We've been together for 30 years, and for most of that time Ted (Edward Ripley-Duggan) and I have made our living selling rare books by mail order from our home. We have two daughters, Alison (14) and Suzanna ("Suki" 11), and live in the country in upstate New York near Woodstock.
The Net serves as an external nervous system for me, and I run several private bulletin boards. Analyzing Internet social dynamics, from forum interactions to online death hoaxes, has been a special interest of mine. I've recently contributed material on Wiccan interfaith relationships on the Web to M. Macha Nightmare's book "Witchcraft and the Web." I research obscure aspects of folklore, mythology and sacred geometry, and explore satellite images of Mars looking for anomalies which may suggest remains of artificial structures. I've had marbled paper pieces in international juried shows of marbled paper art, and some photographs in local juried shows. I've spent the last two years involved with local school board politics, not because I have an inherent interest in politics but because it was what needed to be done for the sake of the district's kids.

d photographing megalithic sites and ruined castles and abbeys. I manage to do all this strange stuff and also keep grounded as a soccer mom, which I find the most exotic (yet satisfying) activity of them all.
Being middle-aged has been a rich and complex time for me. There's a certain amount of freedom that comes with earning every one of those silver hairs, and knowing a whole lot more about how the world works than I did when I was younger. The last 15 years have brought many lessons about birth and death, all crammed into a few short years. Yet in many ways I'm still very congruent with the person I was in high school, with many of the same values and interests.
2020 UPDATE
The above was written in 2002. Since then I've survived emergency brain surgery after slipping on ice, and cancer, and am doing well since both of them. Useful learning experiences, and they brought some gifts, like finding out what I'm made of when facing challenges.
My political action is now primarily done through our local Indivisible group, to elect good local and state candidates.
I no longer do much forum activity online, but that's switched over to Facebook, where I post under the name of Carol Joyce Maltby. Feel free to send a friend request (but no Trump supporters, please).
