Carol's Story

Being USAF military brat who hails from Shreveport, LA, I currently reside in the southern Pocono Mountains of northeast PA. My schooling was garnered world-wide from Cheyenne WY (Rossman Elem, Arp Elem), Tehran IR (TAS or Tehran American School), Shreveport LA (Cherokee Park Elem, Lakeshore JHS, Broadmoor JHS), graduating Byrd HS Class of '74 (Go Jackets - Sting 'em)! Between graduation and embarking on chosen career path, I unfortunately endured abusive marriage but granted divorce with custody of only child, a daughter Erika now grown and working IT out in AZ. To increase knowledge in my career field of Medical Transcription, I utilized strong skills honed from class plus attended Vo-Tech night classes in Med Terminology and Basic Human Anatomy working FT at 2d Medical Group Barksdale AFB. I previously filed insurance claims/transcribed dictation for 4 chiropractors at Mooring Chiropractic Clinic, but LA economy caused layoffs leading to BAFB stint. A temp job at Christus Schumpert Health System (then Schumpert Med Center) morphed permanent x5 years but ended upon relo to PA where I recently celebrated 20 years at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Having grown tired of the East Coast, I'm exploring options within Federal Civil Service as I contemplate relo "down south (Georgia) or "out west" (Montana or Wyoming) ... perhaps that inner Military Brat yearns to move? Raised Christian, I unfortunately drifted, keeping company with unbelievers in my early 20s, but my life's turning point came in wee hours one fateful night in Sept 1979, when as I lay broken/bleeding/dazed on deserted LA Hwy 79 near Homer, I asked Jesus Christ to retake control (He did)! Stretched across front seat, my twisted neck/head resting against armrest of passenger door, I tried to sit up but gravity and car slant (in ditch) held me steadfast. In darkness as my left hand grasped at thin air well above my intended target (door lock), I figured unlocking door would enable me to slide out onto the ground where I could then stand up and walk or flag down a car for help. Seriously? Not a chance! Apparently tired from late hour after dinner with friends, I simply forgot to buckle seatbelt (ironically one and only time) and fell asleep at the wheel driving to Shreveport and sustained a fractured right clavicle and C2 vertebra (hangman's break)! By the grace and mercy of Almighty God, I cannot recall details of accident, aftermath upon awakening, thus a point of impact remains unknown, perhaps steering wheel? dashboard? above armrest on passenger door? Thankfully not forceful enough to crush other vertebrae or sever my spinal cord and no residual paralysis plagues me ... only migraines, occasional neck pain. Photos of my Chevy subcompact taken by mom at wrecking yard as well during two months at SMC and three-months in halo brace encasement (forehead to hips) still remind me of a brush with death at 22, yet I am strangely thankful as it is when I started to live truly under the auspices of Jesus Christ! I worshipped at Broadmoor Assembly of God, blessed by not only water baptism but that of Holy Spirit baptism (Acts 2:14-41). And from 1983-93, I exercised my God-given writing talent while co-chairing singles ministry Singles Alive! as writer/editor of its inspirational monthly events bulletin. Fav Scriptures? Thought you'd never ask! So many, but two pop into mind: Psalm 37:4: "Delight yourself in the Lord and he shall give you the desires of your heart," and Joshua 1:9: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be disco...Expand for more
uraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Interests and hobbies quite diverse -- creative writing, photography, genealogy, Celtic history (being of Scots-Irish-English descent), cross-stitch, proud member of Who Dat Nation cheering New Orleans Saints (#9 QB Drew Brees) despite residence sandwiched in between Philly Eagles and NY Giants/Jets turf! Downtime spent dabbling in social media ala Facebook, along with scanning vintage photos/negatives bequeathed from parents and creating CD/DVD photo slideshows with music.Talk about strolling down Memory Lane! Music genre? Just some highlights lest I bore you: Classical (Handel, Dvorak, Haydn), Opera (Turandot-Puccini; Rusalka-Dvorak; Requiem-Mozart; Messiah-Handel; Lakme-Delibes; Die Walkure-Wagner), sacred choral/chant, smooth jazz, contemporary Christian music (Casting Crowns, Newsboys), Celtic/bagpipe rock from Scotland's Red Hot Chilli Pipers ... awesome concert Feb 2014 in Wilkes-Barre PA, afterwards I mingled with band, got pix/autographs! Cool. Reading? What writer doesn't read? My not all-inclusive list of some read, others to read: John Bunyan (A Pilgrim's Progress), CS Lewis (The Screwtape Letters; Mere Christianity; Surprised by Joy; A Grief Observed), Hannah Hurnard (Hinds' Feet on High Places; Mountains of Spices), Jane Austen (Pride & Prejudice; Sense & Sensibility), Charlotte Bronte (Jane Eyre), David Roper (Growing Slowly Wise; Out of the Ordinary), Charles Krauthammer (Things That Matter) and naturally God's "love letter to His children" bound within the KJV Holy Bible. Genre in the movie/DVD vein centers on historical drama (Elizabeth; Elizabeth II; Braveheart; Rob Roy; Gone with the Wind; Wyatt Earp; Robin Hood), Biblical/Christian (The Ten Commandments; Passion of the Christ; Ben Hur; Amazing Grace; Joshua; God's Not Dead); suspense (North by Northwest; The Hunt for Red October; The Count of Monte Cristo), romantic chick-flicks (Pride & Prejudice; Sense & Sensibility; Emma; The Notebook), classics (The Ghost and Mrs Muir; A Letter to Three Wives, The Great Escape; Where Eagles Dare), and to nurture my "inner kid" everything Pixar! Cable TV rarely captivates interest except Downton Abbey and As Time Goes By; occasionally History/H2, TCM. Commentary via Fox News and The Blaze keep me up on current events. Although a registered Republican, I'm attuned to the different drumbeat of TEA Party Patriots, praying daily for our once-great nation to become whole again (2 Chron 7:14)! Last tho not least, I'm basically a jigsaw puzzle: Loquacious, compassionate, creative. I love rich tapestry colors of royal purple, midnight blue, forest green, dark maroon. Dark chocolate and bountiful salads plus steak-n-tater and seafood are dietary musts, along with reminiscing over vast collection of vintage photos or adding new via Canon digital or my dad's bequeathed 1949 Argus "brick" film camera. I enjoy inspirational writing and published a short story in 1976 Anthology of Shreveport Writers Club as youngest member, now writing/editing initial draft of first book--women's inspiration. And most important ... I love and serve the Almighty God, grateful for His mercy and grace as He perfectly fits the multi-faceted pieces of my life together." 'Tis time to end this paragraphed soliloquy of memories despite a beaucoup of 12844 characters, each awaiting a turn in the misty shadows. My heartfelt wish? For old school chums and long-ago coworkers to find insight from above with blessings in their daily endeavors who might perchance touch base. God bless y'all.
