Carol's Story

Things I did after graduation before I got married.... Went to junior college for a year, transferred to a university. Taught beginning ballroom dancing to pay for my rent while there. Lived in a trailer at the foot of Mendenhal Glacier in Juneau, Alaska for 3 months. A bear lived under the trailer for a while. In the mornings he would scratch his back and the trailer would rock back and forth until he was ready to go catch salmon for his breakfast in the lake by the glacier. I ate wild moose. I picked huge wild blueberries in the same field where a bear liked to do the same (I never went alone and I always waited until the bear left before I took my turn). I loved sitting on the ground, looking up through the tall blueberry bushes, feeling the sun peek through on my face, and eating until I was full. I always picked enough to take home and make blueberry cheese cake. I also picked wild salmon berries (which look and taste similar to boysenberries but they are yellowish-orange in color, "salmon"). There weren't as many of those so they were a real treat. I ate tons of salmon during the months I was in Alaska because that was the season they were spawning. I have been to Ketchikan and Sitka islands off the Alaskan panhandle to visit friends. While in Alaska I learned Native American healing remedies from the locals (which I have forgotten most of or can't find ingredients for any more). I have visited friends on a Native American reservation in British Columbia Canada many times during the 6 months while I lived there. I also taught their children on a weekly basis. While in Canada I rode a bike year-round until the winter snow packed up under my fenders and the tires wouldn't go around any more. At that point I had to carry my bike home and stop riding it for a while. I loved seeing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and I loved singing "Oh Canada", their national anthem when I was at large functions. Been married to the same...Expand for more
amazing guy for over 35 years. Five children raised & gone from home. My first was born in Iowa City Medical hospital, in Iowa (the only one not born in Calif). Three were born at home (by choice), and one was born premature by more than three months due to my ruptured appendix (of course that one was born in a hospital.... barely in the nick of time, at a healthy weight for that gestational age, of 2 pounds 4 ounces). We now have seven grandchildren & are totally loving it ! Only one of my children still lives closeby, but luckily they have 2 of our grandkids! While raising 5 young kids went back to school one night a week and finished GEs that I started in my early 20's, worked part time, ran all over the place for my kid's little league, soccer, martial arts, ballet, piano, other music lessons, etc, etc. I had to nurse the two youngest even while driving because we lived in the car it seemed (that was back in the day when car seats weren't mandated by law). I got pretty good at hiding it and using my knee to assist with the driving. (Hey, there are people without hands who can drive with their feet...so...). After age 50 and my youngest was a junior in high school, I continued on full time to earn two Bachelors degrees & a Masters Degree in 6 years. I'm now a Speech & Language Pathologist & LOVE what I do. I'm working in a great school district where I plan to stay for about 15 years. I'm starting my own speech therapy business on the side. (I found out that I'm really good at helping people overcome stubborn articulation problems or unwanted accents). For me, it's like a really fun game where everybody wins. I'm taking Karate for fun (I'm a yellow belt now). Future plans.... take Salsa lessons with my husband, travel a bit, serve a full-time mission with my husband either in Mexico or South America and become fluent in Spanish. (Three of our children are trilingual, the other two are bilingual.... we have to catch up).
