Synopsis of Book- The Hidden Legacy of World War II
In the program for Darryl Zanuck'ÃÂÃÂs 1962 epic film, The Longest Day, Private Dutch Schultz was heralded as symbolic of all the men in the ranks who participated in the 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy. DutchâÃÂÃÂs battles throughout Europe have been written about in Citizen Soldiers, Beyond Valor, and First Men In: U.S. Paratroopers and the Fight to Save D-Day, to name but a few. Accounts of SchultzâÃÂÃÂs war end with V-E Day. Like scores of other combat veterans of World War II, his struggles after returning home received scant attention. The Hidden Legacy of World War II: A DaughterâÃÂÃÂs Journey of Discovery illustrates the reality of living with a veteran father with unacknowledged post traumatic stress disorder. Carol Schultz Vento weaves postwar life with her paratrooper dad into a narrative which conflicts with the commonly accepted view of the Greatest Generation. Her well researched book reveals a number of hidden truths about the âÃÂÃÂGood WarâÃÂàand its aftermath. Little known is that only a minority âÃÂà25% - of our uniform...Expand for more
ed military personnel had actually set foot in a combat zone. Almost half of the discharges of servicemen for medical reasons during the war were for neuropsychiatric reasons, not physical wounds or illnesses. And upon homecoming, marriages were not always âÃÂÃÂmade in heavenâÃÂÃÂ. A divorce boom occurred in 1946; the rate was the highest in American history and was not equaled until the nineteen seventies. Few veterans received psychiatric care from the VA in the postwar years, often dismissed with the Freudian diagnosis of psychoneurotic disorder. Those with psychiatric symptoms severe enough to be hospitalized in a VA institution could be subjected to inhumane treatments of insulin or electric shock therapies and/or lobotomies. The Hidden Legacy of World War II is a groundbreaking book with a relevant message to veterans of AmericaâÃÂÃÂs subsequent wars that some of the brave heroes of the Greatest Generation and their families suffered greatly from war trauma after homecoming from combat. Ultimately, The Hidden Legacy of World War II is a book which displays the resilience of the human spirit and the unbreakable connection between a father and daughter.
