Carol's Story

After high school, I went off to college and never could quite decide what I wanted to major in. I started off at Cornell College majoring in Sociology. I made a lot of really good friends in Iowa and found that taking courses one at a time was pretty cool and good for someone with a short attention span like me! Unfortunately, I did not like my career choices in the field, so I decided to transfer to the University of Wisconsin - Madison and major in Nursing. In Madison, I got the chance to work as an equipment manager for the Badger football team, pledge a soroity and drink lots of beer. Unfortunately, I really did not like nursing, or the cold weather in Madison! I had decided to take a year off from school to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and move back to KC (I had already completed 4 years of full time course work to this point.) That summer, I met my future husband. He was in the Air Force and ended up getting orders to Korea. I agreed to go to school where ever he went when he came back to the US (thinking Florida or Mississippi - somewhere warm.) Much to my surp...Expand for more
rise, he got orders to Rapid City, South Dakota. It turns out that Rapid City is a great place - cold - but beautiful. I ended up graduating with a BS in Accounting from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD. We got orders to England shortly after I graduated. We were stationed at RAF Lakenheath from 1988 to 1992. While there, I worked for the US government and learned alot about politics. Upon our return to the US, we were stationed in Montgomery, AL. Finally, we were warm! Mike retired from the Air Force in 1994 and we moved to Dallas TX where I started with Waste Management. I climbed all over that corporate ladder and we moved to San Antonio, TX, Chicago, IL and finally Houston, TX. We have been in Houston now for 10 years. I got all caught up in the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act compliance at WM and have not been able to shake it ever since. I am at a different company now, but still wrapped up in SOX compliance (Thanks Enron!) I always wanted to be a psychologist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a reasonable idea idea. As it turns out, they were wrong.
