Carol's Story
After high school in June 1971, I went to work at the HISD administration building as a Records Clerk. I worked there until I got married in January of 1972 to Walter Jonte'. He was in the Navy and stationed in Jacksonville, Florida so that is where we lived for two years. While I was there, I worked as a temporary employee with Prudential Insurance Co. for about a year until I found regular employment with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. We moved back to Houston in December of 1973. I went to work for Exxon Co., USA and started a family. I had Allison in January 1975 and Wesley in July 1977. I quit working in 1979 and went back to school. I ended up needing to find another job and went to school at night while working at Amoco Production Co. In 1982, Walter took a transfer with his job at Houston Lighting & Power Co. to the new plant in Jewett, Texas. We moved to Mexia, Texas just north of Jewett. I stayed home the first two years and finally had to go back to work as a records clerk at a group home for the mentally challenged. In 1986, I found a position as an Accounting Clerk...Expand for more
at a local insurance company, Family Benefit Life Ins. Co. Walter and I divorced in 1992 and I remarried in 1994 to my wonderful husband, Jon. He was an insurance agent at Family Benefit and a drummer on weekends with different country bands over the years. Family Benefit was sold to another company, so Jon and I went to work for the owners son at an insurance agency. Jon still played on weekends and was asked to join Gary Stewart's band whom he worked with until just before Gary died from a self inflicted gun shot due to his depression after his wife died. Jon left the insurance business to work for a vending company which is where he is today. I found another job working for Mexia State Supported Living Center as a Direct Support Professional. Between us we have three children, eight grandchildren, two dogs and five cats and live a very happy and rewarding life.
I lost my wonderful husband Jon on February 27, 2012 to esophagael cancer. He found out that he had cancer in May of 2011. He gave it a good fight but even with the chemotherapy and radiation treatments, it took its toll.
