Carol's Story

Photography I am a nature photographer and science writer. I have been slowly generating a library of nature photos, with a special emphasis on wildflowers. Check out my photography at carolwolfe.net and/or carolwolfe.org Life In recent years, I have become a nature photographer, not just for fun, but also as part of my work. I am also a science writer, and so I often put the words and "stories" (information) together for text books, websites, cards, displays, etc. Check out my stuff at carolwolfe.org. In 1985, I left NJ for Iowa... After finishing a MS degree in chemistry (studying polymers) at Rutgers Univeristy, and getting a lab job, I'd realized immediately that I did not want to spend my life working in a lab. So I decided to go back to school and finally study the things I'd always wanted to study: ecology. In Sept 1985, I headed west to Iowa and ended up spending the next 12 years in the Iowa City area. I attended graduate school at the Univeristy of Iowa and got an MS degree (in 1989) for studying wildflowers! I also began getting interested in photography. To help support myself, I did some teaching (both biology and chemistry, both full time and part time) at the college level. I also did some freelance science writing. In 1991, I got a full time job as a chemistry/biology writer at ACT. I stayed there for 5 years, until getting married (June 1996) and moving away. For the next several years, I continuted teaching, mostly part time, and also did quite a bit of freelance science writing for text book companies and testing companies. During this time, my husband and I had two kids. Eventually, after a few moves, we ended up in southwestern Virginia (fall 2004). Having moved to such a beautiful place, I finally decided to give up teaching because it takes SO much time and it can be exhausting. I want to spend more time doing nature photography, as well as continuing my freelance science writing. I continue to do more and more photgraphy as the years go by, and I'll keep doing science writing because it pays the bills. I just recently started working on a new website to post some of the many new photos I have made. See my announcements for the website address. I joined this website because enjoy getting in touch with friends from long ago. I have met numerous interesting people over the years, and have learned many different things. School I suppose the most significant event of my school life was moving to Browns Mills during the middle of 8th grade and and leaving Cherry Hill behind. Most of the kids in Cherry Hill had either ignored me or teased me. Basically, I was a misfit and I did not belong there. So when I moved to Browns Mills I was surprised and thrilled to suddenly be surrounded by peopl...Expand for more
e who treated me well. Some of them even liked me! But these kids were not like any I had ever met before. These kids were, in some ways, almost like grown ups--or at least that's how I saw it at the time. Within just a few months of moving, I went from having a very sheltered and naive perspective on things to becoming, well, it's hard to explain. Let's just say I learned a lot, and my vocabulary expanded in ways I could have never imagined back in Cherry Hill. If you knew me, you will understand what I am talking about. If not, never mind. I have to thank one of my very best friends ever, Keith Patterson, for helping me make the adjustment to my new home! Keith was the first person I met in my new 8th grade class, and he became my first best friend in Browns Mills. I am also happy to say that Keith and I are still in touch, and we attended our 25th reunion together on July 31, 2004. College I spent most of my first 30 years as a student. After high school, I went to BCC for 2 years and then University of Delaware for one--taking as many classes as I could cram into each semester. Having finished a BS (biology and chemistry) in 3 years, I decided to go to grad school. It was either that or get a job! So I went to Rutgers and got an M.S. in chemistry. After one year of a lousy lab job, I decided to head back to school to study the field that interested me most... ECOLOGY! I went to the Univ of Iowa and finished my masters degree in ecology in 1989. During that time, and for the next few years, I also took a lot of classes in writing and considered going BACK TO SCHOOL FOR THAT TOO! Eventually, I put all this stuff together to make a "flexible" career of teaching at the college/university level and doing writing in the fields of chemistry and biology. Workplace I have been a science writer for nearly 20 years. For five of these years, I was employed full time by ACT in Iowa City, and then for another year, by ETS in Princeton. Most of the time, however, I have worked at home as a freelance science writer. I write mostly for text book publishers and testing companies. I write articles, lessons, teacher guides, practice tests, real tests, you name it. I like working at home so this has been great for me. I also do some desktop publishing, combining my knowledge of ecology with my skill as a photographer, to put together newsletters and other documents about wildflowers, forests, etc. In the past few years, I have been doing more and more photography, and I expect this trend to continue. Finally, I have two young boys that keep me very busy in between all the other things I do. Since my husband works at home much of the time, also, we often take turns watching the boys when the boys are not in school.
