Carol's Story

Life I have two awesome children; a son-Christopher McWilliams, graduated from Vilonia, joined USAF and has done very well. He has both an Associates and Bachelors degrees and is currently working on Masters degree. A daughter-Carla Crandall, graduated from Univ. of Missouri, Summa Cum Laude. She was employed by the Dept.of Defense, until she decided to go to law school on a full scholarship.Graduated Magna Cum Laude from law school.. I am very proud of both of them, and love them both more than life itself. I graduated from Stephens College in Columbia,Missouri May 1994 with a bachelors degree in Health Information Management. Worked in the medical community more than 25 years. Worked for both Federal and State Government, as well as private sector. I am a Registered Health Information Management Administrator and Health Information Management Technician. I am not currently working due to medically unable. Was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in October 1990. Had to retire in March 1995 due to the progression of the MS. Family history has become a hobby that I love. Would love to hear from any of you. Look me up on Facebook. School I wouldn't dare mention who I had the biggest crush on. Of course, it was probably someone different monthly, at the very least. While I was at Sheridan Jr. High and High Schools, I had some very good teachers, and I think all of them played a major role in my life and were inspirations to me. I think Gary Kees was most inspirational to me. He gave me a completely new outlook about history, particularly American History. I actually began enjoying it while I was in his class and WANTED to learn. I still use it today, imagine that. I do a lot of genealogical research and you sometimes have to know history to be able to locate your ancestors, and it's fun knowing what was happening during that time period. He had to be a REALLY great teacher to get me interested in history. I, also, gained a better understanding of different occupations in life while taking Occupations taught by Pat Compton. She was great, also. She taught in a way that made it interesting. By the way, my career choice in life turned out to be the occupation/profession that I had done my semester paper on in my Freshman year at SHS. I had forgotten all about it until this made me really start thinking...Little did I know at that time that it would actually b...Expand for more
e something that I would pursue. At the time it was called Medical Records Librarians/Administrators. It is now called Health Information Management Administrators, and can be a quite rewarding profession. College I went to college at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and graduated Mother's Day 1994. Workplace I started my work career at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1975, as a Coding and Research Technician. While I had a couple of various other jobs prior to that time, this was the beginning of my career in the medical community. I was at the V.A.M.C. in Little Rock from 1975 until 1978. After that I transferred to the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Fayetteville. I was there until we moved to Aurora, Colorado. In 1978 I went to work for Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center as a Surgery Research Technician. I was employed there until 1980 when we moved to San Antonio, Texas. At that time I went to work at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base and was employed there until 1985. While at Wilford Hall I served in the capacity of medical transcriptionist, Coding Technician, and Supervisor of Coding Section of Medical Records as an Accredited Records Technician. In 1985 we moved to Joplin, Missouri. I was employed from 1985 until 1989 at Freeman Hospital as Assistant Director of Medical Records. In 1989 I went to work for the Department of Mental Health as Manager of Client Information. I was employed there until November 1991. In November 1991 we moved to Columbia, Missouri where I was employed by the Veterans Administration Medical Center until March 1995, at which time I was medically retired. While at the V.A.M.C. in Columbia I served in the capacity of Medical Records Administrator in the Quality Improvement Section. I was responsible for reporting and investigating medical incidents, unexplained deaths, coding of specific diagnoses and procedures, chart review and preparation prior to visits from the Peer Review Organizations for Medicare, as well as chart review for any medical investigation. I also served in the capacity as monitor for students enrolled in the American Health Information Management Technician Program. I worked closely with the medical staff in all of these positions, giving me the opportunity to get an insight into who the really good physicians were.
