Carole's Story
Life
After 11 years of single life, I married Norman in 2000 (third marriage). We live in Novato (Marin County), and I now am retired from Santa Rosa Junior College. Life is good. I am happy. My name has changed along the years: Brimhall, Bielefeld, Jarrett, and now Bennett.
School
After Long Beach Poly, I attended Long Beach City College. Sitting in the quad, Dr. Roccio (counselor) convinced me I was smart enough to go on for more education, so I continued to CSULB. Most recently I finally completed my doctorate in education from University of San Francisco.
College
I loved my life at Long Beach City College, as I think that is where I finally blossomed. Dating opened up to me, I was introduced to TNT (sorority), I gained confidence in myself, and I loved learning. The TNT girls kicked me out because I refused to be part of Spring Fling (a competitive group dance production), and that was the end of my sorority life. The boys didn't seem to mind, however, and I continued all through college very happily as an "independent."
I'd love to know what happened to some of my old friends who used to hang around the quad. LBCC doesn't seem to have the reunions that Long Beach Poly High does. After LBCC, I went on to CSU Long Beach. I worked part time, lived on the beach in Belmont Shores during my spare time, and have fond memories of the wh...Expand for more
ole experience.
Work
Over the many years, I mostly have worked in education. I taught many years: Laguna Beach Thurston Intermediate, Tustin High School, University High School in Irvine. I worked for five years at the Orange County Department of Education before moving north. I then worked at Solano Community College (as grant writer and manager), American River College in Sacramento (Dean), and last at Santa Rosa Junior College (instructor and program coordinator). In 2012 I finally retired from education.
Retirement
The word RETIREMENT is synonymous with partying! I cannot believe how much more social my life has become. We are having dinner parties, or events to go to all the time. On Mondays I volunteer all day at the Novato Police Department (even wear a uniform). Tuesdays I volunteer with the Marin Medical Reserve Corps where we prepare for the next big disaster. Wednesdays I set aside for activities of the Soroptimist International of Novato which sometimes involves filming public television programs. Thursdays I chair a committee that puts together the North Bay Science Festival to get kids excited about futures in science; in 2013, we had 10,000 visitors. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, my husband and I just play. My husband is also my coach, as he keeps me active enough to compete in an annual half marathon. Fun, fun, fun!
