Caroline's Story
Life
I came to the US from Scotland in 1962. I married the 2nd time in 1977 & moved to Ventura County. My oldest child is 50, a son, another son 48. I have daughters 35 and 34, sons 27 and 23. I had 2 weddings 10 months apart 9/01 & 06/02. I have a wonderful grandson from my 34 yr old daughter, four grandchildren from my first son. My 26 yr old has had a horse for years and was recently diagnosed with MS. We are very involved with youth theater, which does musical workshops for young children. My sons are the tech team and stage managers, as well as performers. I recently completed college classes to attain my teachers permit in early childhood. I lost my mother and went through a divorce after 27 years of marriage.
My work history is quite varied. I was credit manager at Fedco LaCienega when I was 19. Went on to sell cars and be the first female to complete the Leasing Car Program in Southern California- Dodge, at LaBrea and Wilshire. My first sale was a Super Bee with a hood-scoop. I then went into the fashion industry working for an oscar winning clothing designer, Helen Rose. I learned all aspects of the business, including bookkeeping. When we merged with other fashion lines I became a fitting model as well. As her line closed I moved to another fashion name as credit manager and moved up to be assistant to the president, as well as modelling when required. I handled international letters of credit, customs, routed our own trucks and othe...Expand for more
rs and in general learned a great deal. This was the era of the two line phone board as in Saturday Night Live and ticker tape. I was a single mother all this time and enjoyed coaching soccer, being assistant cubmaster and boyscout commissioner, then later Asst. Scoutmaster after training. Then I remarried and moved to Thousand Oaks where I became an engineering secretary to 5 managers and 18 engineers. This was all prior to the age of computer, we were totally dependent on IBM selectrics with engineering fonts, overhead viewers and cells, and IBM Executive typewriters. After having my additional four children I never really stopped working as we did many volunteer activities. With girls, I helped run the Brownies & Girl Scouts, started up a Scottish Country Dance troupe for children, a pet therapy program at a local convalarium, hosted many exchange students from different parts of the world,
and as a homeschooling Mum facilitated many educational field trips and outings for our large home school group (over 100), for eight years). We bred rabbits and parakeets and always kept a large assortment of pets on hand.
(still do).
Twenty-two years of homeschooling completed, wonderful talented children. I hope to take more college classes for special needs.
The past three years have been physically challenging as I battled stage three cancer and am now clear. The treatment made hip replacement a necessity and now I am feeling wonderful and a tad bionic.
