Carolyn Marie Bruno's Story

I have had an interesting life with some downs (2 divorces), but lots of great ups. I'm currently married to a tenured educator at a local community college. He's from Maui and we have a home there we visit quite often. I've lived in Bothell for 13 years. I have 5 wonderful, productive, and loving kids (2 boys, 3 girls) and 4 wonderfully sweet grand-kids (4, 5, 8, and 15 years old-- one boy, 3 girls). I've worked as a scuba diving instructor, a police department communications officer, and for the past 22 years, I've been in computer software sales and management. And several years ago I traveled all over the country while working as a software sales rep. I'm now into making greeting cards (a 'rubber stamper') and I'm a volunteer and a docent at the University of Washington's Burke Museum. I like reading (some fiction, but mostly non-fiction) and I have a few collections of collectibles. My favorite fiction authors are Clive Cussler and Douglas Preston-- love the action! I should have worked towards becoming a geologist, paleontologist, or anthropologist, and I love history... but I didn't have those interests years ago... so now I just read or travel to interesting locations when I can. I do miss the friends and neighbors of my youth, but I'm still close to my old best friend, Chris! ------ 2016: The above story was written in 2008. I can't believe 8 years have passed already! Things have changed. I now have 6 grandchildren, 4, 5, 11, 12, 16, 22, (3 boys, 3 girls) and another baby granddaughter due within a month. That's the good news. The unexpected bad news is that my husband (who is 9 years older then me) has early onset Alzheimer's dementia and kidney disease (he has dialysis three times a week). I never suspected I might end up a full time caregiver. Oh well... with family and caregiving (I handle everything) I stay fairly healthy and busy these days. Living in an area close to Lake Washington and several pa...Expand for more
rks is nice, too! I had planned to visit Sicily (my father's side was from there), but I can't go now (yet), however, that's my current reading passion! I have enjoyed connecting with old friends and making new ones over time. And going to Maui, of course! —— 2018: I miss scuba diving although I still snorkel in Maui as we visit at least once a year and stay in my husband’s home (my home is where we live in Kirkland, WA). It takes a lot of work to make sure Alan has dialysis in HI, but it’s worth it. My son just became certified scuba in San Diego and plans to become a Divemaster (takes after mom, of course). He sailed his 32’ Westsail down the coast from Seattle to SD over a year ago. I stayed in contact with him by Iridium satellite phone giving him coastal and open water updates. It was exciting (but there were a couple scary instances). I flew down to see him in both SF and San Diego and he took us sailing, which I love. He is a software engineer who works from his boat. Other news— I have another granddaughter, almost 2! That makes 4 girls, 3 boys. The 18 year old is going to be a nurse through ROTC. The 13 year old is absorbed in all things Japanese, including language courses. Two grandsons in one family live in North Bend next to Mt. Si, a beautiful hiking area. My oldest son and granddaughter work in Vancouver WA and he is getting remarried this coming August. Although being a caregiver to a husband who has Alzheimer’s (and 9 years older than me), I’ve been able to get some respite and time away (especially quiet time to read!) through the VA and I still work out at the gym. Besides 21 years retired college professor, Alan was also 24 years retired USAF. I make sure he often gets out enjoying a variety of experiences before he can’t do this anymore. I hope all my old (are we old now?) schoolmates are enjoying life despite any lows you’ve had in life, too!! If I knew you, find me on FB. I’d love to hear from you!
