Carolyn Nash:

CLASS OF 1981
Mt. hope, WV

Carolyn's Story

I moved a lot growning up as a preacher's kid; was in both Logan, Mt. Hope and Oak Hill, High Schools. I completed a bachelor of science degreen in mechanical engineering in Spring of 1987. The extended duration was due, in part, to my co-op semesters with TVA in Muscle Shoals, AL (yes, I spelled that right) and due to college being so much damn fun. I stayed five years with General Electric as a factory rep doing turbine-generator installation and maintenance oversight at various customer plants in the mid-Altantic states. When they sent me to Oswego, NY and offered Guam, I decided I'd had enough of life on the road. Hotels and eating out only looks glamorous to those not doing it. It was lonely at night, but I loved the comraderie of the construction workers. I married a college buddy, Bill Nash, and we moved to Kingsport, TN where I am now and will probably retire. I did some masters classes at UT's extension facility, but didn't stick with that. At work, I moved within utility & waste management operations management and environmental compliance oversight at Eastman Chemical Company for 18 years. We bought a 15-acre, mostly wooded, private hollow abutting what became Warrior's State Park with walking trails giving us even more privacy, save for the occassional hiker on the back property line. If you come through here, we're the place with the vineyard, growing 4 varieties of grapes sold commercially to various wineries and amatuer wine makers. We make a bit ourselves, but really prefer the hardy reds from Alexander Valley (CA) and Barossa Valley (Austr.); those grapes just won't grown in our moist weather. ed Eastman to downsize and I was caught in that. Bill had been working as an artisan making nesting wooden bowls and selling them at craft shows. He's got a profile on Piedmont Craftmen's Guild. With my layoff, he picked up work as a Project Engineer with BELL, BCI building a hospital in Abingdon, VA. A month later, the boss hired me as a 2nd Project Engineer. We now work in the same office, not building, mind you. Same OFFICE. Did I mention we were buddies? Good thing. The project will be over in Spring of 2011, so we're not sure which way the wind will blow us. We do know that we want to live in the southern Appalachian mountains or its foothills, if at all possible. But we may do some construction stints up the east coast where our Rochester-based firm typically works. Working on the road would be okay if not so lonely. Working with Bill solves that. Now we just need the econmy to continue improving so there is work for us together. I should mention that we have no children and that it's by choice. We like to socialize with friends; mostly that are much older than us -- read -- no kids. It's not that we dislike children, ours just wouldn't get the priority that children deserve. We opted out, but are favorite aunt and uncle to 8 nieces & nephews. Our immediately family is comprised of we two and two cats. I just love their little, furry faces and independant personalities. See, I do have maternal intincts after all. I hope all my old friends & aquantances are doing well. I think of you fondly as you added to the person I've evenutally become. All in all, I'm happy and hope you are too. Carolyn Anne Carpenter Nash
