Lilton's Story
Life
Chaplain (COL) Lilton J. Marks, Sr. was born in Jeanerette, LA and is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ. He was originally commissioned 31 July 1967 in the Infantry, after attending the Louisiana National Guards Officer Candidate School and was the first African American to be commissioned in the Louisiana National Guards.
His civilian education includes: A Bachelor of Science degree - the University of Southern Colorado, Pueblo, Colorado; a Masters in Public Administration - the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs; a Masters of Divinity degree - the Chicago Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois; and a Doctor of Ministry degree - the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia. His military education includes: the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Chaplains Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Armed Forces Staff College and the U. S. Army War College.
He entered active duty November 1968. As an Infantry Officer, Chaplain Marks served with the 24th Infantry Division, the 25th Infantry Division, the U.S. Army Advisory Group in Louisiana and the 4th Infantry Division in the positions of Platoon Leader, Battalion and Group Advisor, S1, Assistant S3, and Company Commander, respectively. He departed active duty September 1975. Returning to civilian life, he worked for private corporations, state government and pastored churches in his denomination.

His assignments have included: Battalion and Brigade Chaplain, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Deputy Community Chaplain, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), Belgium; Deputy Division Chaplain, 3rd Infantry Division and Force Development and Family Ministry Chaplain, U.S. Forces Command, Atlanta, Georgia; Division Chaplain, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and Deputy Installation and Senior Protestant Pastor, U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He is presently the Installation Chaplain, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Chaplain Marks awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with V device, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with Star, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Vietnam Campaign Medal. His is authorized to wear the Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Expert Infantry Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge.
His civic and social affiliations include: The NAACP, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Stepfamily Association of America, Masonic Bodies - Prince Hall Affiliate, 82nd Airborne Association, 555th Airborne (Triple Nickels) Association, and 101st Airborne Association.
