Carolyn's Story

When I was in high school, I wanted a life filled with music, arts and crafts, nature, and people I care about. Some of those dreams have been fulfilled. I've kept music as a part of my life. Music has given me some wonderful experiences and good friends. My mom taught me to sing harmony at a very young age, and I started learning guitar while young. Later, I added flute and then bass guitar. I've played and sung locally with various bands and acoustic trios over the years. I still occasionally play at the local coffeehouse or at a local winery in my current hometown, both solo and with others. The demands of life have made it hard to make time for my arts and crafts, but I still occasionally do something with that. Most recently, I got into beading, making jewelry for gifts or for my own use. My love of nature hasn't taken the form of living in the country, as I would have liked, but it does affect where I choose to live in the city. I've always looked for smaller towns, or quiet sections of town with tree-lined streets. After switching from living in an apartment to living in a house, I've also gotten deeply into growing flowers. Most recently, I've gotten into growing roses. I love the bright, cheerful color that roses and other flowers add to a home. I also love to do nature photography when I get the chance, including taking pictures of my roses. I was fortunate to have most of my family living fairly close by for a long time -- but eventually most of them did scatter to various places farther away. I'm almost the only one who has essentially stayed in the Bay Area. The farthest away I got was living in the Central Valley for a couple of years. Much of the Bay Area has gotten too ...Expand for more
crowded, noisy, and smoggy for my taste, but we've found a nice little corner on the outskirts that feels like a small town, and is just right for us. Since I've always been detail oriented, I became a bookkeeper. Some people find bookkeeping boring, but I find it interesting. There's plenty of variety in a full-charge bookkeeping job. Also, I sometimes get interesting challenges, like designing a database from scratch to fulfill a particular information need for the company. I've always worked for small companies (other than when doing temp work). Small companies are more personal, and allow for more variety in the work. I've done a lot of studying about healthy diet and lifestyle. This has been necessary for me, as my health has been trying to desert me for a long time. Learning about healthy eating has allowed me to hold off the worst of the health problems for many years, and still counting. Sadly, most Americans don't learn what true healthy eating is. I hope to be able to help other people with what I've learned about it. I've been married for 33 years, to a fellow musician and artist/craftsman. We don't have any children. It wasn't a deliberate decision to have no children; it just worked out that way, due to circumstances beyond our control. We do have plenty of nieces and nephews, with whom we've always loved spending time. They're all grown up now (where has the time gone?), and some have children of their own. It gave me a jolt the first time I heard my sister called "Grandma", and my (younger) brother called "Grandpa". Somehow, I hadn't realized we were old enough for that, even after their childrens' kids were born, until I heard that. I guess to everything there's a season.
