Carolyn's Story

Life I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I am a Radiologic Technologist(Radiographer I) for University of Michigan Health System (UMHS). I work at Briarwood Radiology, a satellite clinic. I got married in 1981 to Roderick Mc Creary. I have one daughter, Carissa Welton, born in 1976, who resided in Beijing, China for 7 years. She came home in July 2011 and lived with me and Rod until she got a full-time job with benefits back in China. She now lives in SchenZhen and teaches English at the international academy there. My husband was diagnosed with stage IV Lung Cancer that had spread to his brain in February of 2015. He died March 18, 2015, from complications following a heart attack. I currently live with a boarder who was with us the year prior to Rod's death. I have a black short hair cat, Samantha, and a Chiweenie, Digger, who is black with white markings. They are both rescues. Rod brought the cat home first and then the dog about a month and a half later. At first, she terrorized Digger but now it is about equal. They have a strange love-hate relationship. I enjoy watching them romp and play together when they are not fighting over who gets to sit by me or who gets to lick my plate. I have 8 grandchildren by my husband's daughter, Natosha Calvert DiBella. The three oldest girls have children so now I have seven (3 boys & 4 girls) great grandchildren! I have another stepdaughter, Pearl Schultz, also born in 1976, who resides in Ferndale, Michigan. My townhouse burned down at the end of August 2000 and has been rebuilt. I moved back into it in March 2001 and am stilling trying to make it my home. (I am slow) My mother died in March 2003, just before her 81st birthday. My father lived in the same house where I resided during highschool until he died in September 2008 at age 85. My brother lives in Fenton, MI. My two sisters live out of state. I am an avid fan of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders). I have traveled with my younger sister, Donna, to various cities to watch the events live. I have a blast getting autographs and having my picture taken with them. Keeps me feeling young! I have been to the World Finals in Las Vegas four times (2006,2007,2008 & 2013). My other passion is racing. I watch NASCAR on TV and went to my first race at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C with my sister in May 2006. I liked it so much that I went to the two races at Michigan International Speedway by myself that year and every year since. My brother road-raced at Waterford Hills from 2001 through 2010. He raced a VW Gulf for 2 seasons until he crashed it. The next season he got an 86 Mustang, which he raced through 2010. I spent lots of weekends in the summer there helping in the paddock and cheering him on. School I had a crush on Tom McArt and another gymnast. I think his name was Peterson. But I really had it bad for Tom Reginek. I knew him in junior high and he went to North for the 10th grade but then went to Farmington for 11th and 12th. I remember Mr. Rasmussen for English. He challenged me. Mrs. Keen for World History and gym. I hated gym and was glad when we didn't have to take it anymore. She was a strict and hard teacher but I did ok. History was not my favorite subject back then but I like it now. My favorite teachers were Mr. and Mrs. Gearhart. My happiest time in high school was the end of my senior y...Expand for more
ear and the time I spent with Barney Welton and his friends in Barney's Beanery. College My first semester of college I shared a room at Michigan State with Sally Sieloff and a girl from Monroe, Pat Tomaro. I ended up leaving after the first term to move to Ann Arbor. I stayed in a dorm room with a girl,Linda Lang, who I met the previous summer while working at Burroughs Corporation. Her roommate was not happy about me being there so I answered an ad in the paper and moved in to a two-bedroom apartment on S. Forrest with three girls from Southfield. My roommate was at her boyfriend's all the time so I had a room to myself. I got my ears pierced there one night when we were bored. They did it with an ice cube and a huge sewing needle. When the lease ended the one girl got married and the other two got a smaller place for the next year so I had to find another place. I got a studio apartment owned by the Vangelatos family, who also owned the famous restaurant on Catherine, Angelo's. I started taking classes at WCC in the winter of 1971. In March I moved into an apartment on Liberty with a friend, Nevatte Bare, who I worked with at St. Joes. She moved out to live with her boyfriend so when that lease was up, I moved into a 2 bedroom apartment on N. Ingalls with Bruce Foreman's girlfriend, April Jacobson, and her friend, Laurie, both transferring from Kalamazoo. I knew Bruce from a mutual friend, Paul Saginaw, who knew Barney Welton. I shared my room with Pat Tomaro, who transferred to U of M from State. We all got along well and it was great fun. I forget why we split up but the next year I shared the same apartment with Bobby Eagle, whom I knew from high school but I also knew him from the gang I hung out with my senior year, Paul Saginaw, Joel Alpert, Bruce Foreman, and Michael Binder, and April. It was another great year. We would all jump in his car and go to Shield's Bar in Hamtramck for pizza on Thursday nights. His girlfriend, Nancy Fink, moved in with us about mid term. It was a good time in my life. They all graduated from Michigan in 73 and I completed my program and graduated from WCC. My name was Henny then. But Bobby called me Apostrophe S, as in Barney's, even tho I was no longer with him by then. Bobby liked Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. He would put on "Second that Emotion" and sing to it. He liked the Jackson 5 too and the Temptations. This was all new to me, a Beatles fan, but I liked it. I had two cats, Jacob and Moses. Bobby was really cool about them too. He called them Clawed and Declawed. He was so funny I really miss him. We lost him in the fall of 1976. I have lots of good memories of those years. That gang was my family, lots of love and support. I am currently working offsite at UMHS Briarwood Radiology as a General Imaging Radiographer. I'm eligible to retire but not ready financially. Will probably go part-time for a few years before I actually retire.
