Carolyn's Story
I live in Fairbanks, Alaska, and write literary nonfiction and poetry. I teach writing and literature at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and spend as much time as possible outdoors. In 2008-09, I lived in Ulan Ude, Russia, for ten months, teaching at Buryat State University as a US Fulbright Scholar. Ulan Ude is the capital of the republic of Buryatia, located in Siberia just east of Lake Baikal and north of Mongolia. I loved living and working in Buryatia and hope to return. Currently I'm finishing two books (one of p...Expand for more
oems, one of essays) and drafting a third (a nonfiction narrative about Buryatia and my experiences there). My published books include *Place of the Pretend People: Gifts from a Yup'ik Eskimo Village* (memoir), *The Alaska Reader: Voices from the North* (anthology), and, most recently, *Upriver* (poetry). I'm fortunate to be following some of my dreams. I still play music, but switched from violin and piano to guitar, and then to flute. Music still lies at the heart of things for me. All best to everyone in the class of '69 :)
