Carolyn's Story
I was raised in Rose Park and went to West for my sophomore year, before my family moved across town. I've always considered West my alma mater since those are the people I grew up and went to school with for most of my life. After graduating from high school, I attended the U of U, then moved to Lake Tahoe; got married, moved to Alaska where i lived in a tent for 7 months, then back to Utah where I had 2 children, Molli and Peter, with my husband, John, a state park ranger. We lived in Park City, Wanship, at Goblin Valley State Park and in Blanding. I separated from John wnen the kids were 1 and 3, went back to school at Utah State and received my degree in Environmental Studies, married a professor and we moved to western Wisconsin,. I attended grad school at the University of MN, securing my MS in Outdoor Recreation Management; completing my thesis on social conditions in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in N. MN. We then moved to Stillwater MN, where I've worked for county parks for 18 years; the last 11 have been running the Washington County HIstoric Courthouse, high on the bluff overlooking the Wild and Scenic St. Croix River. Bill decided he wanted to "do his own thing" a few years ago, so we separated and I now own an 1880 home on the north hill ...Expand for more
of Stillwater. I've spent the past few years piecing together a new life for myself. This isn't what I had planned, but it will work.
Molli and her husband Lance live in St. Paul, about 20 minutes away. Peter and his wife Laura live in Shoreview, again about 20 minutes away. Peter and Laura are making me a grandma for the first time in early March. Peter has an M.S. in behavior therapy and works as a therapist with autistic individuals, Laura is finishing her doctortate in post-secondary administration and is an administrator at the U of MN. Molli has degrees in chem/biology and works at a lab, Lance has a BS in Business Adm and is a financial planner for Waddell and Reed. I'm happy to report that the kids are all settled and doing well.
I drive back to Utah at least twice a year for visits to family and friends in SLC; then head to the S. Utah desert for R and R. For those who knew my youger brother, Jeff, he passed away in 2010 after a 10 year battle with cancer. I"m fortunate that I was able to spend his last two months with him and his family in SLC.
I plan to retire in 2 years and hope to make s. Utah my other home. I'd love to hear my old friends....my days in Rose Park, at Northwest Jr Hi and West High School are remembered fondly, for the most part.
