Carolyn's Story
Life
I was quite frustrated by the workplace Q&A because I couldn't make it fit me at all. So, here's my essay answer. I am supposedly retired, took early retirement with a great retirement package. So I am now Librarian Emeritus at The University of Iowa Libraries, where I was Head of the Government Publications Department and Map Collection. On the job I did do a significant amount of what I consider creative writing - publish or perish. And along with that, Research and Analysis , and national and international professional involvement. Having retired from that after 35 years, I now work for the City of Iowa City, as one of 3 Minute Takers. About 20 hours per week, and aside from attending the meetings for which I'm taking minutes, I do my work at home, any schedule I want, as long as the minutes are turned in within 2 weeks. Remember the highschool typing and notehand class for the college-bound? I hated the teacher (Miss ???); I think we all did. But I still use my notehand.
I am also quite active in my church, beginning my second 3-year term as Lay Leader (which means ...Expand for more
among other things that I am a delegate to the annual state-wide church conference). My status as lady leader automatically puts me on every church committee on an ad hoc basis. Mostly I pick and choose among the committees. Did I mention I'm the church librarian?
I'm going to school, started the third year of a three year program. It's a School for Lay Ministry. Mostly study at home, but am on campus (Cornell College) 4 weekends a year.
I also travel as much as I can. Last year i fulfilled a long-time goal of going to Alaska. It was wonderful and I want to go back. I think that other than Iowa it's the only state I've be happy living in. And I have now visited all 50 states, and a number of foreign countries. I did a lot of traveling for my job.
I'm happily divorced. One grown daughter, who refuses to live anywhere than Iowa City, so that's nice for me. She has a good position at the University, and has so far owned two houses. She thinks she's now met her significant other, so I don't see much of her at present.
That's enough of a catch-up for now. Carolyn
