Carolyn's Story
Life
At 17 and a senior at SRVHS, I met my sweetheart Michael Humeston (class of 1982). Six months before we married (in 1987) he was diagnosed with a rare and fatal blood disease called polyarteritis nodosa. In 1994, he developed leukemia (a secondary infection from the medication) and underwent a bone marrow transplant at Stanford Hospital. He died in March of '95 at the age of 31. Needless to say, I was devastated - I lost my husband, my best friend, my soul mate. A month later on Easter Sunday, I made a tandem skydive at Bay Area Skydiving in Byron to fulfill one of Michael's dreams. From that day on I was hooked! It was truly a gift from Michael that I will treasure always. I now have over 800 jumps and am a licensed static-line instructor. I met my current husband, Mike Burrill, Jr., at a skydiving boogie in Montana in 1998. We were married in Hawaii on Halloween in 1999. I sold my house in Oakley and quit my job at Charles Schwab in San Francisco to move to Southern Oregon. We hauled my dog Riggs, my cat Fub...Expand for more
ar, and my pot-bellied pig Chelsea up here to start a new life with Mike and his dog Mauee. I am currently working part-time for Environmental Management Services (a division of JBR Environmental Consultants) in Medford. Mike works in his family business, Burrill Real Estate, LLC (formerly Eugene F. Burrill Lumber Co.). Mike and I continue to skydive and make frequent trips to California, Hawaii, and Montana for skydiving related events. Life is definitely good for me, even though I never thought I would be able to say that again. It was a bit rough going there for a while, but I learned so much about love, life, living life, and what is truly important - and I wouldn't change any of it.
Update Dec 2007: For the past 4 years, Mike and I have been walking in the Honolulu Marathon (2nd weekend in December) with Mike's grandma, Glady Burrill. She is the oldest woman to participate and last year she finished in ~8.5 hours. This year she is 89 and plans to continue to walk it until she's 90. She is a true inspiration.
