Carolyn's Story
Five years after graduating in 1965 I returned to school. I was accepted at UTEP (Univ. of Texas at El Paso)and drove out there to begin my college education. While sitting in orientation, I feared I would not be able to manage financially school and living expenses on my own. So I packed up my belongs and headed back home to Maryland. Enrolled in Harford Community College and then later took courses at Maryland Institute College of Art and Univ. of Maryland. Never completed my degree (3 years), but between free-lance art work experience, college classes in both art, and business, I became an Illustrator and fine art painter.
Along the way I was employed in a variety of positions. My most interesting was working for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Loved the atmosphere of working in "The Nation's Attic". Also was employed as an Administrative Assistant/Office Manager for a Law School in Santa Barbara, California. While employed there I rubbed shoulders with some notable personalities. But I missed the East Coast and came home to Maryland and married a former...Expand for more
sweetheart.
Ned Colburn graduated from Havre de Grace H.S. in 1958 and Univ. of Delaware in 1963. We have been married for 35 years and have lived here in Havre de Grace since that time. Our only child, Kristin is 34 and is now married and the mother of Chase Edward (named for his grandfather Ned).
I retired from the Dept. of the Defense in 2004 as a Visual Information Specialist (fancy name for Illustrator). Since that time I have been very busy volunteering for the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum, gardening, traveling, painting, and enjoying babysitting my little Grandson who will be two, June 2010. I hope to continue with my art as that has been a life-long satisfying interest.
Update as of 1 January 2013:
We welcomed the birth of our second grandchild, Cole Anthony, on 14 September 2012. Mother, father, and big brother, are all adjusting well and we are delighted that our family has grown. Babysitting two at times is now a challenge for me, but also very rewarding. Discovering all that is new through a child's eyes is so special and joyful!
Happy 2013 everyone!
