Carolyn's Story

Since leaving high school I have married, traveled, had two beautiful daughters who are now 21 (Lauren) and 18 (Heather). Early in my life I worked in dentistry and once I retired my license I was a stay at home mother. After my divorce, I went to nursing school and found my niche'. My primary area was cardiac... I found that I enjoyed fixing broken hearts. Nursing offered a challenging, rewarding and flexible work experience that allowed me to spend a lot of time with my girls. After three years I grew tired of floor nursing and the cardiac stepdown unit was more like an extended intensive care unit... It was stressful, long hours and many nights 8 patients, which made it harder if I were charge nurse with 8 patients. So, I moved to the intensive critical care unit and worked Surgical Intensive care (open heart recovery) and Medical Intensive care ( a bit of everything) and sometimes I floated to the ER and other specialty floors; i.e. Cancer and Medical/Surgical. The latter two were my least favorite. In 1999 my father fell gravely ill with end stage lung disease and passed away in May of that year. It was hard on all of us, but especially on mother and my girls. Mother became ill with her heart in September of that year and there was much change. In April of 2000 I went to work for Unum Provident as a RN Clinical Consultant Case Manager and I have been there since. This has been an awesome career change for me and one that I have been very successful in. I work closely with treatment providers all across the nation and evaluate not only disabilities, but functional abilities that will afford those who have lost much of their previ...Expand for more
ous work capacity due to illness, but still are productive members of society. Together with their doctor, vocational rehab specialists and our provisions or in conjunction with workman's comp, state vocational rehab and other agencies we have assisted many to return to work allowing them to be productive, hold on to health benefits and contribute to their families welfare increasing their own feelings of self worth. I feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments. It is just wonderful. After 14 years of single motherhood, I met a wonderful Christian man; Eddie Marthin. Eddie is an electrical engineer and holds a MBA from Texas A&M. Eddie is also a member of Mensa. In October of 2004 we decided to partner and share our lives and we were married. So, I am three years into the journey and feel very blessed to have him to share my life with. Lauren is a junior in college pursuing a career in education; she wants to teach 6th grade English and Science. Lauren is going to Ireland in May, is a full time student and works full time as a Wireless Service Customer Care Representative. Recently (2/08) Lauren decided that she wanted a job change and will be going to US Express as a Recruitment Liason. Heather will graduate in May and has several areas of interest, but nothing concrete yet. But we have many appointments, plans and visits before the ultimate decision. Heather would ultimately like to be a Registered Animal Technician. And so the story goes as we continue on our life's journey. We keep our eyes on today and hope for tomorrow. Our family motto is: "Without exposure, nothing develops". God bless each of you and thanks for visiting.
