Carolyn's Story
Life
As of April 2005 I am a happy new home owner in Mesa, AZ. I'm an Academic Advisor at a local University by day, and a professional Opera singer by night. I've never been married and I don't have any children -- but I adore my 15 month old nephew and his 5 month old sister like they were my own :)
I've lost some of my class pictures and am especially looking for Ms. Spencer's (or is it Ms. Speer?) kindergarten class picture at Hill Elementary in Arlington, Tx (1977-78). Let me know if you have it! I'd love to talk to anyone who I went to school with - even if you made fun of me for being "fat" in grade school :P
School
I didn't really enjoy school until I moved out of Tempe to Mesa, AZ. At Mt. View high school I made some really good friends who I am still close with today. Without school choir, I probably would have stayed my shy self. Choir and good friends helped me come out of my shell and I turned out to be quite the ...Expand for more
social butterfly.
Mr. Perry, my high school choir director inspired me the most. He firmly disciplined us yet he allowed us to be our goofy, teenage selves. I'll never forget him! He also gave me the opportunity to discover that I could sing. I went on to NAU to study Opera and it's a huge part of my life today.
College
After high school I spent 2 years at Yavapai Community College in Prescott, AZ, and then went on to NAU where I graduated in 1997 with a Bachelors degree of Art in Music. Then I went to ASU and earned my teaching certificate (K - 12 general music). During the middle of this all I served an LDS mission in Budapest Hungary for 18 months.
Workplace
I've had so many jobs, I can't count them all! Being a music/choir teacher has been my favorite by far - besides getting paid to sing with the Arizona Opera. That's a dream job even though it's low on the totem pole compared to singing at the Met - maybe someday!
