Carolyn's Story
Life
Inspired by the idea of a possible 50 year class reunion (just got the email from Classmates.com) I thought I'd dash off a bio!
Some of you may remember that I was married during our senior year (1956) skipped graduation and took off for San Diego with my parents. Married Roy Roberts in Seattle and he left for 18 months in Korea. On his return he started college and I worked. Soon 3 babies came along, Roy finished college and it was MY TURN!(Roy Shared all the homemaking/babysitting duties.) I Graduated from San Diego State with an undergraduate degree in Microbiology/pre-med. Did a one-year internship as a medical lab technologist, but hated the routine of it.
Picked up a pilot's license around age 30 and put in about 320 hours in a little fabric covered piper cub airplane. Had to spin the propeller to start it. Could fly it with the doors open and it did beautiful corkscrew spins from high in the sky to earthward! Was never good at landings though and the skies got too complicated for me with all the control zones.
Never made it to Med.School but became involved in medical school mgmt. and obtained an MBA from San Diego State at the ripe old age of 43. Managed medical school departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery at Univ. Of Ca. San Diego, Medicine at University of Ca. San Francisco and Medicine at U. of Utah. Big departments, the last one having a 90 million dollar annual budget. (remember our shorthand and accounting teachers? ) The shorthand fell by the wayside, but that accounting became pretty important! Retired from the University and didn't know how to deal with that, so For the last 4 years I've been a full-time broker...Expand for more
associate realtor with Prudential in La Mesa (San Diego County) and loving it.
Because of the good San Diego real estate we had invested in, we were able to take two 2-year "sabbaticals" and sailed the west coast and to Hawaii and lived there a year. Eight years later after finishing my master's thesis, we sailed San Diego to Annapolis--yep, right through that canal. Wonderful times. Lived aboard that last boat for 10 years --living in Sausalito, Alameda, San Diego and lots of foreign ports. A 40 ft. Taiwan built sailboat named Wanderlust II, sold it in Annapolis in 1996.
Scuba diving has become a passion and we've been to all the great caribbean spots, plus New Guinea, and looking forward to Palau in February. I work now to build up the travel funds--want to go back to Europe, visit Portugal, the Greek islands, etc.etc.
Painting watercolors has become another interest, and I've been studying painting for the past six years or so and loving it. Nothing abstract for me--it's capturing the reality that's key!
Ah yes, 3 kids all living in San Diego and 6 grandchildren from newborn to 22 and we'll be celebrating our 50th anniversary next year as well as that possible 2006 class reunion. Are enough of us left for a reunion???
November 2014--well, a few more years and we're still here. At age 61 I started working as a realtor, thinking maybe a year or two, and now 15 years later, still at it. Doing lots o watercolors, website caroljrobertswatercolors.com All my contact info is there. Often wonder how many of us are still alive, sad to see that Richard Carter passed away--and there must be others. Celebrate life and enjoy! Carol
