Carolyn's Story
My mom went to be with the Lord on Feb 4. Her obit is on Legacy: Aleta D. Smith, Burbank, CA.
God did protect us in Guinea Bissau. We returned in May 2017 after the most productive eight months of our fifteen-year marriage. Augusto trained four dental tecs, the dental lab on the YWAM base in Gabu is going strong, and together Carolyn and Augusto helped the brothers finish 73 lessons (two volumes) of Bible-based literacy material in Fula. Just this week (Oct 8-12) a new class was started (prayers, please) and we learned about a Christian school that just started using the Portuguese Bible-based materials with 3rd and 4th graders. We even TALKED to the director. The only GLITCH--our friend, who directs all the clinics at YWAM says the elections are coming in November and the gov't is not as willing to have a Christian school on the base. The school has 200 children. We must pray for this little, many times forgot...Expand for more
ten nation. She, too, has a part in God's plan.
After working in LAUSD as a bilingual special ed teacher for 10 years, Carolyn went to Peru in 1995 for several years as a missionary. NOW (2017) she and her family are going to Guinea Bissau, West Africa, for 8-10 months to work with Youth With A Mission. Her husband was a dental tech on the side, while working with the Ministry of Education in Peru and now is going to train dental techs in this extremely poor country (172 out of 183 nations on the human development index). They are also collaborating with Literacy and Evangelism International to help a local pastor develop a literacy project in his first language, Fula. The literacy rate was 39.6% in 2010, according to Operation World. The country is primarily Muslim, but Christianity is on the rise. The official language is Portuguese, but Creole and many tribal languages are spoken. We need God's protection!
