Carolyn's Story

Even though I now live in Tennessee, I am still a die-hard Detroit Tiger and Michigan Wolverine fan and totally surrounded by Atlanta Braves and Tennessee Vols fans! I worked right out of high school but at the age of 43, after being out of high school 26 years, I went to college and graduated Summa Cum Laude! As far as work goes, I once heard Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers say that it is great to get paid for doing something you love and that is how I feel about my job as a paralegal. I absolutely love it and they pay me! My hero was my father. He taught me what unconditional love is, he taught me to be myself regardless of what others want, and he gave me my love for baseball!! My seond inspiration was my brother, Readus. Although he suffered from cerebral palsy, he never felt sorry for himself and he proved that he could do what people said he could not do (i.e. walk, drive a vehicle, etc.) He always thought there was some good in everybody. I miss both of my brothers and my dad so much! Baseball is my number one favorite sport. I love the Detroit Tigers, but can ...Expand for more
watch any team play baseball. My current age is 63. When I was 13, I thought that people my age now would be sooooo old. I was so completely right! (Ha). I share my home with my 92 year old mother, which I find wonderful. She is amazing!. My first job was at Dixie Shop in Ypsilanti, where I got paid .75 an hour to ticket clothing. What I remember most about it is I thought it was the greatest job ever for a 16 year old, getting to work around all those clothes. I wanted to play baseball with my brothers and the neighborhood boys and they wouldn't let me, telling me "girls don't play baseball". I always wanted to be a the first female umpire in professional baseball when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was "dreaming beyond reality" idea. As it turns out, they were right, still no women umpires in MLB. I made it as far as little league. One of my greatest treasures is my certificate from the Michigan High School Athletic Association as the first female "Certified Umpire". I umpired little league for six years. Secondly, my college diploma "Summa Cum Laude".
