Carrie's Story
In high school, I was the quite one and was always in the company of Delores Byrd and Jacqueline SImpkins. However, not so quite anymore.
Following high school, I attend University of South Carolina- Aiken Campus, where I studied nursing for two years. I received an Associated Degree in nursing and began my career at the Medical College of Georgia as a RN-Staff Nurse. The opportunity that MCG offered- to experience a variety of nursing opportunities-nursing became an integral part of my world, and a basis for the values that I hold most dear. This lead me to return to school and I obtained a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from USC- Columbia Campus. After which I returned to Augusta, Georgia and began working at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VA).
In 1988, I married an engineer and moved to Houston, Texas. There I resume working at the Veterans Affairs Medica...Expand for more
l Center and enrolled in a Masters Degree Program in Nursing at Houston Baptist University. I obtained a Masters Degree in Nursing in 1991 and was divorced that same year.
After my divorce, I moved to Pearland, Texas which is a suburb of Houston and I continued to work at the VeteranâÂÂs Affairs Medical Center. By that time, I was involved in management and had held several head nurse positions and nurse executive. In addition, to have implemented several new programs for the VA. To compliment my role management, in 2005, I had earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration.
Currently, I am still in management at the VA and am an adjunct Associate Professor and faculty member at San Jacinto College, School of Nursing-North Campus, Houston, Texas.
Every year I return to Aiken to spend time with my family. I am making plans to retire there.
