Caryl's Story

Life Hi, How does one pack 50 years of life into a biogrqphy?!!! Here goes! After graduating rom St. Catherine's, I followed my dream of moving to California. I hitched (yes, I did in 1956) a ride with a couple I met through working at a fancy clothes shop in Milwaukee. It was great. Before I left, I had been dating a local fellow. He didn't want me to go and offered me a beautiful diamond ring. Wrong!! Didn't fall for that. I left!! After five months, he followed me out to California. I thought he must be the one (because he traveled so far to fetch me) I decided to marry him. Hmmmm-mmm not a good solution in the long run!! It must be that good old Catholic upbringing in the 1950s. When I was there I even made contact with Wayne Christensen (one of our classmates) who was a Marine at Camp Pendelton (sp?) which was in the area. I have lost track of him since, but I believe he may still be in California. I came back to the Milwaukee area in 1957, married Jim McDermot who had followed me out to California, had one girl and four boys and after 18 very controling years, received a divorce from Jim because he couldn't stand the children (not a slam, he says the same thing)and went on to raise them myself, so I thought. BUT, I had been raising them by myself all this time and it really was a breeze after he left. Jim and I were married 18 years. I worked at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Massachusetts for 30 years and retired at the age of 66 in December of 2003. I was a Graphic Artist in the Marketing Department and loved it. I decided that it wasn't worth looking for another relationship and put all my efforts on the kids. When I wasn't looking, my next husband found me. He was 12 years younger than me and I really thought it ...Expand for more
was silly, but "what the hell", we were having such a great time, and he loved kids, that I decided to accept his hand in marriage. We were fortunate to have a son (I was 40 at the time) and our life together was one big adventure every day. We NEVER fought (miracle in itself) and nothing was insurmountable. We zigged and zagged in our efforts to support one another. It truly was great. Last year on June 2, 2004, my husband of 28 years and soul mate, Mark Taylor, was killed in a tragic automobile accident while traveling, on his job, in Maine. It was very sad. I have come a long way since then and am no longer as sad. If you would have known Mark, you would understand my next comment. I told him to, "Let me go!" It wasn't me hanging on to him because I prayed to God to accept this. It was Mark hanging on to me. I firmly believe that, if we lose someone, there is this connection that has to be broken, or, for those of us left on earth, it would rule us until we die. Well, that was not supposed to be a lesson in death...just what has happened to me lately. Believe me, I am much better and cannot wait to see those of you who choose to attend the reunion. There is so much more to tell. I have one daughter and five wonderful boys. Mark's son, Adam, spent three years in Japan and six months in Iraq. He is now a Captain in the Air Force and teaching Navigation for the C-130P. He is also finishing up on a six month tactical weapons course. I am very proud of him as his father would have been. This is such a minimal biography. There is so much that all of us have experienced since we left St. Catherines. I am so looking forward to seeing all of you and sharing these details. Please do not hesitate to post a note here. Caryl E. (Williams) Taylor
