Life
Whoever thought this quiet kid who was too shy to speak to most of her classmates would end up as a career journalist? I've spent my post-college years in the newspaper/media business as a reporter and editor and recently retired after more than 20 years at the Los Angeles Times as the travel editor. I still freelance and travel and, most important, I actually talk to people all the time. I live in the Los Angeles area, love to garden, antique and occasionally still ride motorcycles. I do lots of volunteer work, including running a writing coaching program, for the Society of American Travel Writers and am president of its foundation.

spent a lot of years married to my job, but then I got married for real to a wonderful man who was a Dodgers fan. (I still cheer for the Washington Nationals, previously the Senators.) We had many fun years together, and although he wasn't fond of traveling, he would follow me anywhere, including Sydney, Australia, for the 2014 opening of the Dodgers season. That was, alas, our last big trip. He died of kidney disease in 2016, also leaving behind a daughter and two grandchildren in Philadelphia.
I couldn't have imagined the life I've lived, but I'm grateful for every minute. Virginia will always be in my DNA, but LA is home, at least for now.
