Catherine's Story

I'll start my story from when I lost my job about 5 years ago. I had to sell my house and move in with parents because I couldn't get an interview for a job at the same salary I was making after working 25 years, without a college education. I was on unemployment and found out that I could either go to another technical school, or I could get a Tuition Waiver for an Associates Degree. I chose Bergen Community College because it was close, and I heard that it was a good college, although I wasn't so sure about that, but I didn't have time to check out other colleges so BCC it was. When I started in January of 2006, I was very impressed with the faculty and the quality of the education you could receive if you applied yourself, so I dug in right away. I graduated high school with a solid B average without applying myself very much. Many times, I did my homework in the class before the class where it was due. I hardly ever took my books home, and I even remember sleeping in some of my mid-morning classes because I never got enough sleep. I surprised myself when I got five A's the first semester and made the Dean's List, the Honors List, and was invited to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa, BCC's international honor society. I decided I was going to keep up the pace, though it wasn't easy. My husband became disabled at 40 years old and I have been the breadwinner for the last 11 years in addition to taking care of the house, both inside and out since he became ill. Anyway, I worked part-time at the college, and finished my degree in two years with 91 credits (I changed my major 5 times). I graduated with a 3.983 average. I was disappointed because I got a B+ in an honors class during the last semester. But nevertheless, what a turn-around ...Expand for more
from high school! The whole point of the story about the picture is that it was taken by my sister Jackie at the college's Academic Awards Ceremony the week of graduation. I earned two scholarships towards future classes, a special PTK Award for excellence, an honors degree, etc. When I graduated, I had on a yellow PTK Sash and tassel, a yellow and red cord for honors, a yellow and red cord for PTK, a PTK gold key on a yellow cord that was given to only two PTK students in the class. I wasn't going to walk at the graduation in May of 2008, but I figured, what the heck...I earned it! Due to the special PTK award, I ended up second in line at graduation where almost 700 walked, and I was given my diploma by my new boss, Dr. G. Jeremiah Ryan, President of Bergen Community College. I forgot to mention that in December of 2007 when I was finishing up my classes before the holidays, I applied for the position of Senior Administrative Assistant to Dr. Ryan, and guess what? I got the job! Dr. Ryan liked the fact that I was "home grown", and since I'm good at follow-up, I typed a letter thanking him for my interview and delivered it to his office in less than hour after my interview. I later found out that Dr. Ryan sends a hand written note to everyone he meets every day, and the first two years he was President of BCC, he sent a hand written birthday note to every staff and faculty member at BCC. I just had a promotion in September, and I am now BCC's new Database/Web Content Coordinator, a new position created especially for me! I am currently taking two online courses towards a Bachelors Degree because I was awarded a $7,500 scholarship by Felician College in Lodi. So good things can happen when you go to college, even at 47 years of age!
