Catherine's Story
Life
was raised in Michigan and attended Michigan State University where I received my undergraduate degree in Social Sciences with both a Sociology and Education minors. I then married and moved to sunny southwest Florida where I lived for twenty-three years. Both of my sons were born and raised in Florida. I was a homemaker for several years before returning to teaching in the public schools (this gave me a little time to realize the difference between theory and practice when it comes to working with children!). I volunteered at the school, was a Den Mother, took classes at the local Cultural Center and entered what I refer to as my 'craft phase'. As my boys entered Middle School I decided it was time to pursue my career in education. I went back to college and received my MEd. from the University of South Florida in Curriculum and Instruction with a technology specialization and have been 'hooked on computers' ever since. I love trying to find ways to integrate technology into my curriculum.
I am a lifelong learner and a teacher. My jobs allow me to pursue these interests. I have been a part of the Baker College adjunct faculty since 1999. I worked at the Clinton Township campus and have found it immensely rewarding. I also managed the computer lab at the Ford Van Dyke Learning Center in Sterling Heights until very recently. This was a great job. I spent my days helping my students in their self-directed learning. Not only did I get to stretch m...Expand for more
y skills on their challenging projects but also never fail to gain new insights and knowledge along the way. I can honestly say I learn something new everyday from my students.
I have recently relocated to Punta Gorda, Florida (yes, the famous Hurricane Charley really did a number on us!) and finally feel 'at home'. My family is close and needless to say I welcome the warm weather in the winters. I am working online for the most part with consulting jobs for local businesses on the side. It is the perfect job situation for me.
Computers and technology are not my only hobbies. I love to travel and do so whenever I get a 'break' from teaching. Needless to say I have worn a path from Michigan to Florida in the past few years. After all, I now have grandchildren to consider!
My husband's job took us to the Seattle area for three years. We explored the Olympia Peninsula and the beautiful surrounding areas every chance we got. It is a truly amazing place. Colorado and New Mexico are other favorite spots to visit. I also visited Italy in 2005 and can't wait to take a return visit.
I am an amateur jewelry designer. I love to make jewelry out of wire, beads, silver and clay. Watches are my main focus right now but I also enjoy making necklaces, earrings, bracelets and pins. Silversmithing is also a favorite. I hope to turn my hobby into a small business someday. In the meantime it helps relieve stress and provides unique gifts for my family and friends.
