Catherine's Story

Hello fellow LICHS alumni! Can it really be 37 years since graduation? Wow! How amazing life is, we all have stories to tell and like a book some have more chapters than others. How many chapters are in your "book"? Chapter One for most of us is the same, childhood, school, friends, and graduation. Chapter Two begins the day we receive our diploma. For me, I went right into the work force as a bookkeeper, living on my own and enjoying the single life, all in the same area where I grew up. Near the end of this chapter while in my mid-thirties many changes began to occur. A long-term relationship ended and the loss of two jobs in a row due to lay-offs. Chapter Three begins the day I moved to Central Florida to start over, what a change. The tropical weather suited me very well and I also changed my career choice by working in retail. I was out and about and working with the public, this is also where I met the man I would eventually marry. Tim was divorced with a beautiful 4-year old daughter, Jesi. She was and is a great kid, almost 21 now, in college and doing very well. I'm very proud of you, Jes. We shared a lot of happy years together and together we created our wonderful son, Jason. Jason was my very special birthday present coming into the world on my 41st Birthday. How much more special can it be than to share your birthday with your child. This is where Chapter Four starts, me as wife and mother. I loved being married and love being a mom, discovering a whole new world. I lost my selfish ways and enjoyed every minute of watching my son grow. Being an older m...Expand for more
om has many advantages, patience being the biggest. I became one of those "school moms" that I remember from elementary school, always there to help and go on school trips. How fun to watch your child grow and learn and interact with his friends. I baked dozens of cupcakes throughout these years as well. I became a Substitute Teacher during this time and had the time of my life. I truly loved working with the little ones; they give so much warmth and love back. Near the end of this chapter things changed again, people change, relationships change and a marriage ends. I have now started Chapter Five; single again, raising a 14 year old who will be starting high school next year. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me? Jason and I sometimes struggle with feelings and attitudes but I wouldn't change anything about him, he is an absolutely great kid, caring and very smart. I'm very proud to be his mother. I still work in the school system, as a Student Advocate with a program called Take Stock in Children. We award college scholarships to low income well deserving middle and high school students. I love my job and love giving these kids a chance to make a difference in their lives, how rewarding. How amazing life is, isn't it? I'm happy with my life and thank God every day for all the blessings he has given me along my journey through life. I look forward to the next chapter in my life, maybe even finding love again, sharing all the first and all the hopes and dreams. I'd love to hear from you all and share with you your stories. What chapter are you in? Take care, Cathy
