Catherine's Story
"...Life is a highway, I want to ride it all night long...if you're goin' my way, I want to drive it all night long..."
For those who really want to know, a condensed version of my life's path thus far:
The day after graduation I reported for duty at Clear Creek Ranger Station (USFS) as a fire fighter. Met up with Scott Osborn when we were both fighting the same fire that summer, that was a surprise...for both of us! I took some courses at Antelope Valley College that winter. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up...
The next summer I moved back to Sedona, AZ, joined the fire department, became an EMT, upgraded to IEMT, Swiftwater Rescue and Technical Rescue, became a Capt. in charge of two ambulances. In 1986 I married a Battalion Chief and my best friend, had two daughters (all grown up now) and after 11 years of being a medic we ended up moving to Montana.
My most favorite job? 10 years at an AZA accredited zoo in south-central MT, working my way through all the departments. Started as a relief keeper for two Amur (Siberian) tigers and a host of other mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes, amphibians. I ended up being Education Director for 5 years, which was really neat.
In 2006 I went into ...Expand for more
business with my good friend and zoo co-worker. We now own Mad Science of Montana. We wear lab coats and make slime...how cool is that? We only blow things up now and then. ;-) I love my work!
In 2007 I became a grandmother and that is WAY more fun than being a parent. :-)
I still like taking my old bones hiking. I try to dip a paddle in a river at least once a year. More is always better. And one of these days I will finally know what I want to be when I grow up.
I can't believe more than 10 years have gone by since I last visited this site. I am now semi-retired. I no longer work Mad Science and only teach now and then. So much has happened during those years. Some great trips around the country and I spent a week in Kauai with my best friend, Raquel Hernandez (we left the men at home!). We did a lot of sight-seeing and kayaking. This summer we took the oldest and youngest grandsons on a grand tour of Yellowstone NP, Zion NP, Bryce and the Grand Canyon where we rented a cabin on the N. Rim. The boys and I did a lot of hiking! Here at home I've been keeping busy working part time up at the airport handling air freight for UPS while I wait for Michael to retire so we can do some real traveling together.
