Catherine's Story
I graduated from Weatherford College, went to the University of Texas at Austin for one semester and then flew to Japan and married Mike Sims, who was in the Navy in 1972. We came back to attend the University of Texas at Austin in 1973. I got a Bachelor's in English and Communications in 1974, then a Master's from the LBJ School of Public Affairs (also at UT-Austin) in 1978. I had my first child, Christopher, in 1976 while in grad school. I worked for US Senator Lloyd Bentsen, the state legislature, Comptroller Bob Bullock, the Texas Department of Transportation, Ann Richards and George Bush (as governor)--having two other children in the meantime--Jonathan in 1982 and Elizabeth in 1983. 25 years with the State of Texas. Mike and I divorced in 1996, after 24 years of marriage. I left the state and worked as a consultant Project Manager with computer programming until 2008. I remarried in 2002 to Paul Carr and moved to San Antonio. I have a step-daughter, Kathlynn, who is a senior in high school. (We're all seniors in this house!) I left work to go on disability in 2008, because I have progressive, degenerative arthritis and a lot of titanium joint replacements. But I volunteer, take water aerobics, advocate for the Arthritis Foundation, help out at church, and follow UT football, basketball, and baseball, as well as the SA Spurs and WNBA SA Siverstars--not all on the same day, of course.
