Cathie's Story

So here's my 20-year story... After I graduated high school, I had dreams of becoming a world-class print journalist. However, since I was paying for college on my own, the closest thing I could get to an education in journalism was a BA degree in Organizational Communications from IUN. In college, I had the opportunity to serve as a feature writer for the Northwest Phoenix and worked as a News Intern for a little radio station in Crown Point called WJOY (thanks Tom Higgins). {Sidebar...As I was waiting to be interviewed for the internship, I saw this really good-looking guy waiting in the lobby. I thought to myself "I hope he works here". It turns out that he was there interviewing for a sportscasting and sales position. We both were hired for our respective jobs. Four years later, we married and just celebrated our 15th anniversary.} I was also appointed the Public Relations Chairperson for the IUN SGA. This is where I found my calling. The Student Activities Director at the college had heard of a program called "Into the Streets" designed to inspire traditional college students to volunteer in the communities which educate them. I became the program chair, had a successful launching at IUN, traveled across the country to conferences and workshops and helped write a $250,000 grant which was funded by the Lily Foundation and the U.S. government. I also won a summer marketing internship at the "Into the Streets" headquarters in St. Paul, MN. This was it for me. Giving back, paying it forward, helping those in need. It became my purpose and has defined my career. I took a position with the Boys & Girls Clubs of NWI and helped open the Hammond Club. After I graduated from college, I was promoted to Program Coordinator and then after I had my 1st son, I was pr...Expand for more
omoted to Program Director of the EC Katherine House Boys & Girls Club where I remained until January 1999. After nearly five years with the Clubs, I decided that I needed more of a "day job" and started my career in staffing. I took a direct-hire placement position with a small staffing firm and found a niche where I could still help people better their lives and I could make a decent living (the latter was lacking in my non-profit career). In 2000, my husband, son and I made a big change and moved to Las Vegas. Most of you who knew me well knew that I had always wanted to live there and I finally had my chance. I continued my career in direct hire staffing and then temporary accounting & finance stafffing with a company called The Eastridge Group. I worked with a "dream team" and made friendships that will last a lifetime. Long weekends were spent at the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce National Parks, San Diego, and Anaheim/Disneyland. My husband earned his second degree in Secondary Education from UNLV and became a high school math teacher and in 2004, we had our second son. I was "living the dream", but something was missing. I had a very close relationship with my grandparents and I realized that I wanted the same for my children. We decided to come back. In 2005, we sold our house, found positions in Indiana, said our good-byes, and headed east, settling in Valparaiso. I took a position with Accountemps in Merrillville and am now Division Director for the branch. My husband is a high school math teacher in Hammond. Our oldest son is 12 and just finished 6th grade and our youngest son is 4. We have two cats, Clyde and Lucky and a puppy, Tuffy. We have enjoyed having our big family get-togethers again and reconnecting with old friends. And life goes on...
