Cathy's Story

Life Call me a late bloomer if you like--but it feels like my life has just begun. In 2002 I started working on my Nursing degree prerequisites which I finished, then applied to nursing school and didn't get in, thank God. I realized that nursing was not my calling, so I switched gears to major in Human Development and Family Sciences with an option in Gerontology. I discovered while doing research for a technical writing project what I want to do with life after college. There is a movement to de-institutionalize nursing home care for the elderly--the Green House Project--and I'd like to play a part in replicating the model. I secured an internship for summer '07, working for NCB Capital Impact in Washington DC, a non-profit that is administering the Green House Replication Initiative Grant. I loved working in DC as an intern and hope this experience opens doors in the future in a career to help make life better for our frailest elders. Aside from Green House, there are many other organizations who are also helping change the culture of aging in this country. I'm sure I'll find the right place to do my part in the culture change movement. Late bloomer yes--but I could not have become what I am or do what I'm doing right now, without having experienced the hardships and character development of my younger years. ndmama'. My other two are still at home; Gwen, who is 16 and Crista 14. We live in a little town called Lebanon, in Oregon's Willamette Valley. My two youngest both love horses and I try to send them to horse camp as often as I can. I am a single parent and am enjoying the freedom of not being unhappily married. My life revolves around school, work and home for the moment. I'm in the top 15% of my class at Oregon State University, something that I feel very proud of, because I take my academic work very personal. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. I look forward to graduation next year and getting established in a new profession, if I decide not to pursue a Masters. I want to travel and do more scuba diving once I can afford it and I also look forward to putting my two daughters through college. The memories I have of good ol' South Gate, my friends and my years in school, are some of the dearest. As a child you've got no control over what your parents do, so you move when they move, you endure the divorces, the changes and you adapt. When I think about what are my roots, I think about you all--my classmates, my teachers from Stanford Ave. and others. These memories are a constant for me, the things that didn't change. My contact info can be found through searching Oregon State University's find a person. Let's stay in touch and all grow old and wise together. Cathy
