Cathy's Story

How do you summarise a;; those years of experience in just a few words. Here goes... I spent the first 14 years of my life in Sydney Australia. Attended Turramurra Primary School then Turramurra High school. Life was a wonderful series of adventures exploring the islands of the Great Barrier Reef when we went there for Dad to do his research. In 1976 we moved to Hawaii so Dad could get his PhD in Marine Geochemistry. The 2 years there were the most wonderful experience. I hiked the Koolau mountains, snorkeled the reefs, surfed the beaches and made friendships to last a lifetime. Hawaii is truly a unique place to grow up. In 1978 we moved to Georgia and i went to Rabun Gap Nacoochee School in the North Georgia Mountains. This experience was so different to anything i had experienced in Hawaii or Australia, both culturally and spriritually. Again the friendships made here will stand the test of time. I graduated from RGNS in 1980 and attended Brunswick Junior College in Brunswick for one year then went to the University of Georgia for another year. I returned to Australia in 1982 after completing a these 2 years of Uni in Georgia. It counted for nothing here and I had to start over. I decided that engineering was the only course that sounded interesting at the local University (James Cook University JCU of North Queensland) as we had moved to Townsville, so i signed up to do electrical engineering. After the first year I could not understand how those electrons made it all happen so I swapped to civil engineering. JCU was not very large then and I had only 16 in my class. It was small, intimate and made it impossible to skip lectures. The routine was good and after 4 years I...Expand for more
finished. My first couple of jobs were in research first with JCU then with CSIRO. Both of these positions had me doing research into glass failure. I hated it. The job at CSIRO had been my chance to move to Sydney, where I have been ever since. My Uni boyfriend Rashid and I married in 1989 (after living together for 3 years). He is also an engineer. I got a job with a consulting engineering firm as a traffic engineer and did that for a bit over a year. I loved it but the commuting (up to 2 hours each way each day) was killing me. I got a job in local government and have been there ever since. I have worked for a few different councils, all in the western suburbs of Sydney and currently work for the Council in the area where I live, Campbelltown. I am a stowmwater engineer these days but also do a lot of strategic planning and some structural design. In 1996 we had a son, Dolan and he is a great kid. He is 11 now and we do have our moments, but for the most part I just love having him around. Rashid and I are now divorced. I have a cat and a dog and 2 fish and 2 yabbies (Dolan is hoping they will breed though and has already asked if he can raise the babies in the bath tub). My passion outside work is photography. Thank goodness they invented digital cameras as the film was costing me a fortune. I prefer nature photography but enjoy the challenge of trying to get good candid shots of kids at play. I have started playing with high dynamic range photography which is great fun and have recently gotten back into sewing.
