Cathy's Story
Life
Update 7/4/09: What a task! I started college as a biology major at Ga Tech. I moved from Atlanta to Knoxville when I got married in 1980 to a GT grad, and transfered from GT to Univ of Tenn. In 1982, we transfered to Arlington, Texas. My son Doug was born in 1984, and then we moved to Yuma, AZ in 1987 to be closer to the hubby's family. My daughters Lauren and Beth were born in 1989 and 1991. I started working for Weyerhaeuser Co. in 1993, until my division was bought by International Paper in Aug. 2008, so now I work for IP. I returned to college yet again in 1997, this time as a Business Admin major. I received my BS degree (how appropriate) from Northern AZ Univ. I am now divorced, and after living in the desert worm-hole of Yuma for 19 years, I finally figured out how to get out. I now live in Metro Phoenix, in the west valley. The 2008 Superbowl was 6 miles from my house! My brother still lives in metro Atlanta and my parents are in Florida, so I do get back home now and then. Oh yeah, I drive a 4x4 dark blue GMC truck, which we take out into the desert and mountain trails. I read mysteries, and stitch several kinds of needlework. The things I miss from Yuma are taking dance classes with my daughters and playing in a handbell choir at my church. I worked on a superior ...Expand for more
court judge's election campaign staff (he won). I travel when I can, and have been to 40 states, including Hawaii, but have never owned a passport (sigh). Travel is still mostly a future dream for me.
School
I am glad that I didn't graduate early and miss all the fun. I like having been able to experience the prom and the graduation ceremony. Important occasions should be celebrated largely.
I miss the parties, Six Flags, summer vacations with friends' families, and the close friendships we shared. All my yearbooks except senior year were lost in a flood. Someone should make sure we have copies of each yearbook to view at the reunions.
College
Too many fun distractions the first years, too few fun distractions and too many family obligations when I returned to college years later.
Workplace
I am the Controller for the International Paper (formerly Weyerhaeuser) corrugated container (box) plants in Phoenix and Yuma, AZ. We make boxes for companies like Coca-Cola, Frito Lay and Pepsi. I have held this position for several years. I worked my way up through the accounting department over the last fifteen years. I used to think it was my dream job, but lately I have been suffering burnout from too many long hours, too many responsibilities, and not enough authority to invoke changes.
