Cathy's Story

The Last 36 Years: People have been telling me my profile was a bit 'weak' so I've added some fluff. After High School, I attended SUNY at Cortland as an English major, soon realizing that other than teaching, I was going nowhere with this degree. So, having had success in a Speech Pathology course, I switched into the Speech and Hearing for the Handicapped program. I was scheduled to begin my Masters in January of 1978 at Queens College, but two months prior started a temp job at Elizabeth Arden in NYC. Seems I had an affinity for business as well as a passion for the Cosmetics and Fragrance industry, and over the next seven years concentrated on an exciting career. Never practiced as a Speech Pathologist, and some days I regret that decision, although NYC in the days of Studio 54 was a thrilling place to be working. Met and married my husband in 1979, and our first child (Ken) came along in 1985. Going back to work in NYC was no longer important to me so I became a full-time mom. We had moved from Montclair, NJ to Caldwell, NJ in 1980 where we lived until 1994, and in 1988 our twin daughters (Leigh & Kay) were born, much ...Expand for more
to the chagrin of Ken. I did some free-lance advertising and sales promotion while doing the mom-thing. Tried working full time, but it was too stressful when the kids were young, and I was fortunate that financially I was able to stay at home with the children. In 1994, we moved up to Cheshire, CT for my then husband¿s job, and have been here ever since. As soon as the kids were in school full-time, I started working part-time and when the youngest turned 16, got their driver¿s licenses and no longer needed my chauffeur services, I started working full time. I moved into the world of non-profits, becoming the Director of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, CT Affiliate and today am the Director of Development for The First Tee of Connecticut, a youth development organization that uses golf as the vehicle to teach children core values (honesty, perseverance, integrity, confidence, etc) and essential life skills. Unfortunately, as happens all too frequently in this country, my husband and I drifted apart, resulting in a divorce this year after 29 years of marriage. And there you have it. 36 years in a few paragraphs¿
