Cathy's Story
I always thought it would be fun to be an airline stewardess, but decided to go to TCC, 2 wks. after graduation.
I wanted to get all basics at TCC, & then transfer to FSU, in marine biology.
I completed all the basics, but instead of transferring, I was encouraged by one of my professors, to enter the nursing program. I had never considered this profession, but my teacher said I was a "natural". Thus, a very long career began!Of all teachers, I think my favorite was one of my nursing professors-Mrs. Jenkins, who was an example of competence, confidence & compassion -I wanted to be that kind of nurse. And Dr. Riordan, who taught nursing students, Anatomy & Physiology & Microbiology. He made you want to learn & helped to develope the ability to "put it all together", & make sense of it all.
One day the pressure was so bad, he just encouraged the class & told a joke-"Did you hear about the guy that drank 20 Fresca drinks & snowed in his pants?" I'll never forget how the class just about fell out of their chairs laughing!
I attended Bible college in Greenville, S.C., but did not complete-my desire was to get masters in med. missions.
When I returned to Talla., I ran into an old friend who graduated from FSU-Nilene Thompson. We celebrated my freedom & her graduation by taking a cross-country trip to Colo.& southwest. It was 1 hilarious adventure.
I always wanted to eventually teach nursing, but family obligations always came 1st. I worked very long hrs.& the areas I worked depended on whatever stages my kids were at. I have always chosen to remain as a bedside nurse. Even though there were opportunities to enter adm. areas in nsg., I could never be tha...Expand for more
t removed from hands-on care.
My favorite area of work was in an open heart unit in Gainesville, Fla.
I married George, in 1980-he had been working as a rate system analyst with the Public Serv. Comm. He had graduated from Auburn Univ. in 1974, & did post-grad. work at FSU, in accounting/economics. He wanted to be his own boss, so he became a broker of insurance & real estate & opened his own office in 1985. HE IS A TRUE WORK-A-HOLIC, but has always been very active with the kids.
My sweet Melanie, was born in 1981. She is truly a precious gem. She & my son-in-law, Nate, have blessed me with 1 grandchild-Miles.He has long, long lashes & has me wrapped around his little finger.
My Josh was born in 1986-on my 33rd. birthday! He married Natalie several yrs. ago & they say they will plan a family soon.
I have been retired for health reasons for about 6 yrs., but am greatly enjoying "smelling the roses" with my family.
If I could change anything, I probably would've made the time to travel more with the fam. instead of work so hard. I've worked since age 16-with no break in employment, & am enjoying adjusting to a little slower pace of life.
I enjoy "skyviewing" with telescope or looking at gemstones/crystals with a loop. It's fun to watch the little ones learn.
If I could build a dreamhouse, it would be a loghome with special detailing, with large wrap around porches, sunroom & spa-like bathroom.
I would love an oriental garden with koi ponds & outdoor hammocks.
I hope my friends remember me as a compassionate, funny & loving person, who makes life better/happier.
My faith is very important & I pray daily & intercede for family, friends & our country.
