Cecelia's Story
I left Sylmar in 1974 and moved to the beach. I spent my 20's in Belmont Shores, CA, just north of Seal Beach. It was a great place to live and I always said I would live there forever unless I left California. I made the big move in 1982 to Juneau, Alaska and have now been here for 37 years, half my life as of April 2011.
I had worked for the travel industry in California as a tour director (on day tours of Southern California, and 2 week tours of the Southwestern U.S by bus.) and a travel agent on Wilshire Blvd. The travel agency sent me to Alaska for 4 days to learn about it so I could sell trips to our clients...Well...5 months later I moved here.
I worked for a tour company the first summer (Juneau is a major cruise ship destination, in fact if you are ever here on a cruise and come to Juneau, call me and I will give you the local's tour, (Message me and I will send you my phone number.) In December of 1982 I started working for Western Airlines, we merged with Delta Airlines in 1987. I was a customer service agent (ticket agent at the airport) for 8 years until I quit to raise my son, Thomas, born in 1990. I met my husband on an airline flight into Juneau, we sat next to each other, and got married in September of 1987.
I stayed home with our little boy for 7 years and then started substitute teaching at his school when he was in 1st grade. I subbed for 10 years.
When Thomas was a sophomore, I become a high school volunteer. Thomas still liked to have me around and he was very involved with the theater and music departments at Juneau-Douglas High. He played violin in the Chamber Orchestra, sang in the Choir, acted in the plays and musicals. Over the last 3 years of his high school career, they did productions of "Into the Woods", "M*A*S*H", "Les Miserables" the musical with 75 cast members, Jekyll & Hyde (57 cast members), Auntie Mame and two children's play," Alexander, and the Terri...Expand for more
ble, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" and "Pecos Bill". I worked on props, costumes, hair/make-up and feeding the kids on all of them and had a great time. I was officially the costume designer on three of them. I wish I had gotten involved in theater back at SHS. I stayed very busy with it all and it was wonderful spending time with all the kids. I even got to go to Hawaii with the music department his junior year. When he went off to college, I continued to volunteer with the new high school in town, 3 blocks from our house, as their costume designer and photographer. It was still great fun and I worked with kids who were my students back in my subbing days when they were in elementary school. I worked with the new school's theatre department for 4 years and costumed 11 shows, and watched kids I knew since kindergarten grow up.
We are living the retired/grandparent life now, still have our home in Juneau, and bought a condo in Blaine, WA the summer of 2014. Our daughter (my stepdaughter) and her husband live in Bellingham, WA, with our 2 beautiful little grand-daughters, born in December 2013 and June 2016, Our condo is about 20 miles north of them and about 6 miles south of the Canadian border. Our son still lives at home, which is great for us as we leave town for 2 to 3 months at a time, and Alaska is not a good place to leave a house empty in the winter for that long. During our first time gone it snowed about 15+ inches in 2 days and then rained and refroze it all back to ice. He got the driveway all cleaned up, before he went to work but the snowplow didn't plow the road till later, they put up a 2 to 3 foot berm and then it rained and froze into ice before he got back home..poor guy.
Hope life is treating you all well. It would be great to hear from you and I am serious about calling me if you ever make it to Juneau, even if we don't know each other well. I love to show off my town. It is beautiful here.
