Cecelia's Story
Life
Cecilia Armena King is the great, great granddaughter of daguerreotypist, Augustus Washington, who took the famous portrait of John Brown the abolitionist (1800-1859), taken circa 1846-47. She is the granddaughter of former President of Liberia, West Africa, and Charles D. B. King.
At a very early age, Cecilia demonstrated a strong artistic talent by doing her artwork on the walls of her bedroom, on tables or on anything she could draw on. Her parents, did not seem to understand how ingrained Cecelia¿s artistic talents really were.
Throughout her schooling, she always took the basic art courses that were offered in elementary, middle, and high school. She even entered a contest in middle school to design the yearbook cover and won. The ¿Linden Leaves¿ was her first taste of recognition.
Finally, when Cecilia graduated from high her mother to take her back to Liberia. It was there, that Cecilia entered the ¿Miss Liberia Pageant¿ and won. She was sent to England to compete in the ¿Miss World Pageant¿. The pageant gave Cecilia an opportunity to model. All this while, deep within her, the artistic spirit that she so naturally possessed refused to die.
Cecilia¿s surrealistic pen and ink prints have made their way to galleries and private homes around the world. One of her current masterpieces, called Cerita, named after her daughter, is currently touring around the world. The Cerita drawing was published in a book titled ¿Women of the World¿ a global collection of art; narrated by Claudia Demonte, forwarded by Arlene Raven, published by Pomegranate Communications, Inc. in California, in 2000. The entire exhibition, which includes the Cerita drawing will be permanent...Expand for more
ly housed, when it opens in 2008, in the new International Museum of Women, being built in San Francisco .The same piece has also been published on the cover of Miatta Fahnbulleh¿s CD ¿ Blast from the Past¿ released in 2000.
Cecilia has created her own style of work that is unique to her. She does work depicting women in a tapestry-like design all by hand. Her artwork reflects the same ¿pictures within pictures¿ concept that she so admired in William Gilbert¿s work. As you study her work, you can see more than meets the original eye. Cecilia¿s work has many pictures that can be identified within the original drawing only after careful observation of it. She says that it takes her anywhere from 3 to 6 months to do just one piece. She has recently done a beautiful portrait of the famous, well-respected dancer ¿Katherine Dunham¿. The portrait has been seen and blessed by Ms Dunham herself. In the recent years Cecilia has recognized that she also possesses a talent for poetry. Her poems have been published on ¿Poetry.com¿ among her favorites are ¿Maybe!¿ ¿Don¿t cry!¿ ¿Hush My Love¿ ¿I Wish¿ ¿A Mother¿s Love¿ and ¿In your Eyes¿.
Cecilia Armena King¿s uniqueness and God-inspired artwork is moving up the ladder of success and will be among the greatest in its time. Her work has a fantastic imagery and oddly dreamlike and unreal quality depicted in them that is unsurpassed in this period of time and history.
¿Please be my guest and allow me to present them to you. They are my gift from God to you, all of you!¿ Love always Cecilia.
