Katherine's Story

Life After leaving Spokane in 1974, my family ended up in San Diego, CA. I finished high school in El Cajon - graduated a semester early (Jan. 1976). Began working in retail (hated it), but then jumped into banking. Met my 1st husband through my brother - should have known!;-) Divorced after 11 years...and after moving to Atlanta, Ga. (no children, knew it was a mistake!) Lived in Atlanta for 20 years, met my current husband, Ken, at Kimberly-Clark Corp. (after vowing to never marry again) Our first year dating we spent hiking the Appalachian Trail (which begins in GA) - taking day hikes with the Atlanta Ski Club). Had a major conversion in my life, just as I married Ken. Made a Cursio type weekend (yes, I'm Catholic, but was sponsored into the Methodist 'Walk To Emmaus')...and then continued the journey to The Brothers & Sisters of Charity (with Ken) and became Domestic members in 1996. Ken retired (he's 18 years older) at 58 yrs. of age - and we began discerning what to do 'in retirement.' We didn't fit the 'golfing' crowd, so we spent 6 months discerning the call to mission volunteers in Nicaragua (the Brothers & Sisters of Charity have a mission on the Island of Ometepe). That in itself was an eye opening experience...again, another life changing experience too. However, upon our return to the USA, we soon spent 5 mos. with Ken's parents in WI - taking care of them through some health issues. We kinda discerned then that mission 'work' doesn't have to take someone half way around the world - we found it in our 'back yard.' So, as I was graduating from college...yeah, it took forever! (undecided...too busy, etc!) I was transitioning out of Kimberly-Clark into what we thought was another call: applying at our church to help out in their new daycare. (I've never had children, but love them!) After a year as a teacher's aid, I requested to be the daycare 'chef' - this was a shock too, as I am NOT a cook! They were in need, and I had it on my heart to make sure the children had a good choice in food! (Yeah, I researched lots of recipe ideas!). That was challenging - but well rewarding. So, I had a nice college degree - and making minimum wage! Life was great. We continued our journey with BSC (domestic), learning more & more of the Franciscan/Benedictine spirituality - took a week long vacation at their retreat house in Eureka Springs, AR called 'The School of Simple Living.' Gee...another life changing experience. We came home and discerned (this time with spiritual direction) what God was calling us to. We had experienced life at the monastery (part of the retreat 'experience') - which not only had brothers & sisters - but families, with children. Like the models of early Christian communities. So, we 'applied' to live at Little Portion Hermitage in AR in 2001...Expand for more
, and were accepted. Ken was the maintenance man, helping in keeping the grounds, buildings and cars/machinery in shapde. I was the bookkeeper (again, interesting in that my college degree helped out here;-) However, we were volunteers...and would not take any money for our services. So, now I was making less than minimum wage. Doesn't God have a sense of humor? The monastery life has a rythym; prayer, work, prayer, community meal, work, prayer, 'hermit' time. The bell rings at prayer times and I love the silence in the mornings (which is lifted after the prayer over the lunch meal). (of course, you are 'allowed' to talk to get work done; asking questions, etc.) During our 5 years in community, Ken had triple by-pass (while on vacation in WI), his father died in 2002, my mother died in 2004 and his mom died in 2006. We left community to take care of his mom, but she died a week before our move. So, since we were packed...and had business to take care of with her estate, we decided to become full-time RVers. We've been on the road since June 2006. Yes, we're loving it! We are back in AR to help a dear friend, just diag. w/lung cancer. 2007: Marlene passed away on Divine Mercy Sunday, so we traveled north to WI (Ken's family lives here). We decided to find a piece of land to park our RV, put in sewer, electric and water for a 'landing pad.' However, in our search, we found a builder who had 5 acres and would build for us. We designed a home, 1400 SF with basement and put down roots. 2016: Ken is still enjoying retirement. I'm the clerk-treasurer for our small town of Conover, WI. It's an elected position, which is strange....to find myself in this kind of work! I enjoy the variety of work that is entailed...although I'm not fond of elections: 15 hour days, and a ton of pre-work! My husband is my Chief Inspector, but he had that position before I became clerk-treasurer. I would encourage everyone to get involved in your local government - it is very interesting, to say the least! School Started freshman year at Marycliff High School in Spokane, WA. Moved after my sophomore year - with family to southern CA. What a culture shock! Attended Granite Hills HS in El Cajon, Ca. - but didn't fit in. (kids already were in clicks - and since I was super I didn't try real hard) Tried college the summer after I graduated (Jan. '76 - guess I had more credits than I needed;-) - took golf and piano (didn't want to strain myself!). Didn't have a plan of what to do, so after another quarter of community college, I worked full time and put college on the back burner. I had attended Grossmont Community College and Cuyamaca College for a time too, then moved to Atlanta and continued community college there. Finally graduated in 1997 with a BS in Bus. Admin. from Shorter College.
