Cecilia's Story

Life Liberal, pagan, child-free by choice, politically radical, and a musician. I live off the grid in the mountains. I can't put my garbage outside because the bears will tear it up. I have a telephone... in my office down the mountain. I don't watch TV; I get my news from National Public Radio. I am debt-free and fiscally conservative. I make my own electricity with a small hydroturbine. I was in a punk rock band in the 80s and travelled the US, Canada and Europe. I made about $75 profit from that venture. I spent a little time in China, learned some Mandarin, and taught English. That was interesting. School I remember school being slavery and torture. When I sent off for my transcripts years later, I was surprised to discover I was mostly an A student. I hadn't remembered that part. I loved all of my English teachers. The sweetest and best thing of all was my then-boyfriend, George, walking with me, listening to music, driving around town in his Chevy Malibu. He made my school years bearable. I wish him only the best. College School was such a craptastic experience and my homelife was so awful, there was no way I was going to voluntarily sign up for more slavery. I have led a life of independent scholarship, studying and doing what I wanted. I had a real problem with authority figures, I guess. I have studied German, herbal healing, music composition and p...Expand for more
erformance, writing, and desktop publishing. I may possibly be a computer geek because all my friends ask me for help with their computer issues. My latest acquisitions: another piano, another accordion, a Linux laptop, two looms, a bunch of books. Always with the books. Workplace I am either a huge failure or a huge success. Either way, huge. I use work as a means to make money. I do not derive my identity or self-worth from a career. I purposely worked as a secretary: a job that I could do well and not embarrass myself, yet leave at night and not think about it and let it drain me of my juice. I needed that juice to write, play music, sew, create, hang out with friends, learn things. I have worked at other jobs like writing--something I still do for free for a small, local paper. Also, I've done desktop publishing and graphic slide design. But I keep coming back to the old reliable job. Using work to make money has worked well for me: I am debt-free and own 20 acres and a cabin with my partner. I pay off my credit card every month. I have a savings account and all kinds of IRAs squirrelled away. I try to live the good life without sacrificing my soul. But really, it's all prostitution if you think about it. Military I have no military service. People yelling at you and having to follow orders sounds like slavery to me. I have no problem with other people serving.
